The TIALD pod was already flying on the Tornado, keeping a watchful eye on Saddam Hussein in Iraq during the aftermath of the Gulf War.
The TIALD research and development programme for the Jaguar would be brought forward to enable the single-seater to meet the Bosnia requirement.
TIALD had, to date, only been used by the two-seat Tornado and there was some doubt as to whether a solo pilot could fly the aircraft and attend to the Electronic Warfare systems and operate TIALD successfully.

 Coastal Command History - Squadrons
A large number of Tornados, assisted by TIALD and Pavespike Buccaneers, were tasked against military targets early this morning.
In the evening, Tornados fitted with TIALD returned to one of the airfields attacked earlier and scored three direct hits on communications facilities, missile and POL storage areas.
However, overnight, Tornados equipped with TIALD attacked an airfield and scored direct hits on the runway and a taxiway intersection.

TIALD is an upgraded version of the laser guidance system used to such effect in the Gulf War (remember those pictures of bombs disappearing down the air conditioning vents of buildings?).
TIALD is not easy to operate, and was originally designed for two seater planes.
Now, however, multiple copies of the TIALD sim have been ordered, copies which - because they run on a PC - are enormously versatile.

The TIALD or Thermal Imaging And Laser Designation system was developed by GEC-Marconi during the late-80's and early-90's.
TIALD has been progressively upgraded since the prototypes first saw action including being made suitable for single seat aircraft.

 [12.0] Targeting Pods
TIALD was combat-tested in prototype form during the Gulf War and produced in small numbers.
At long range, it can be slaved to the Tornado's air-to-ground radar to lock onto the target, and then the weapons operator can choose between a wide or narrow field of view image.
TIALD has "auto-tracking" capabilities to keep the laser beam locked on a designated target, and also contains a profile in ROM to allow it to recognize when the laser is being blocked by parts of the carrier aircraft.

Recently, some RAF F3's were modified to be able to fire the ALARM anti-radiation missile, and thus be able to take on the mission of suppression of enemy air defences or SEAD.
There are also rumoured plans to equip the F3's with TIALD pods, giving them the abilty to drop laser guided bombs, making them true multirole aircraft.
Traditionally the ground-attack versions are camouflaged in a grey/green pattern whilst the fighter or air defence model is in light grey overall.

 AirToAirCombat.Com: SEPCAT GR.1 Jaguar Details
The first step in the series of upgrades took place in 1994, when the British Ministry of Defense issued an ""Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR)"" to fit a handful of the machines with the GEC-Marconi TIALD (Thermal Imaging And Laser Designation) 200 targeting pod, which had been shown to be a necessity during operations in Bosnia.
The Jaguars given this initial TIALD upgrade were given the new designation ""GR.1B"", and went into action over Bosnia in the spring of 1995, generally performing ""buddy designation"" for RAF Bae Harrier GR.7s.
The ""Jaguar 96"" program brought the machine up to GR.1B standard, with TIALD support, the MIL-STD 1553B databus, the new HUD, and the hand controller (actually an improved version of that fitted to the GR.1B).

The laser-guided Paveways - accurate to yards from a height of up to 35,000 feet - will give British pilots in any airstrikes an advantage over their comrades in the 1991 Gulf war, who had to brave anti-aircraft fire on low-level missions that cost several lives.
He said: "When the Gulf war started, the TIALD was being developed.
It was brought into service in a rush during the war and we flew some laser-guided bomb missions towards the end of the conflict.

Also it seems that without the Tiald the guided bombs wont glide onto target and just fall straight even though in the targeting MFD you can still select and laser a target without the tiald.
Does this mean that the tiald is necessary to laser bomb a target and without it you cant use guided bombs.
I am asking becuase the game does seem to recognise the tiald and so AI flights dont seem to be installing it along with their guided bombs.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many Tornado GR/4's have a fully operational TIALD system; what percentage of the GR/4 fleet this represents; what assessment he has made of the effectiveness of the TIALD system; and if he will make a statement.
TIALD is a fully operational and very effective system fitted to a proportion of the Tornado GR1 fleet.
Technical problems have delayed completion of the integration of TIALD onto GR4 aircraft but full operational clearance is expected to be achieved in late 2000.

DESERT STORM - AN ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVE
Allied capacity to deliver PGMs was severely limited by the unavailability of Lantirn targeting pods to the USAF and Tiald pods to the RAF.
Lantirns were carried only by the F-15E, largely committed to Scud hunting, while only a pair of development Tialds were carried by the Tornado force, which largely relied upon the geriatric Buccaneers for daylight designation with equally geriatric Pave Spike pods.
The only aircraft fully equipped with suitable equipment were the Pave Tack fitted F-111Fs of the 48th TFW, deployed from the UK.

Weird that they reffer to the pod as LANTIRN, the EO part of the system has been exported but the offical name of the product is "Sharpshooter".
Ideally the Saudis would have not messed around with the LANTIRN which is upgraded 1980's technology, and would have gone for one of the new 40,000ft pods such as TIALD, SNIPER or LITENING.
However the Saudis did already have LANTIRN on the F15 and problably saw it as an oppertunity to use the same pods on both aircraft.
