Tagged Image File Format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TIFF is a flexible and adaptable file format.
As a result the lowest common denominator soon became "the" TIFF, and even today the vast majority of TIFF files, and the code that reads them, are based on a simple 32-bit uncompressed image.
TIFF has an option to use LZW compression, a loss-free technique of reducing file size, however this technique is covered under several patents in different jurisdictions.

 The Unofficial TIFF Home Page
TIFF uses 4-byte integer file offsets to store image data, with the consequence that a TIFF file cannot have more than 4 Gigabytes of raster data (and some files have begun to approach this boundary).
TIFF was developed by Aldus and Microsoft Corp, and the specification was owned by Aldus, which in turn merged with Adobe Systems, Incorporated.
TIFF is a very extensible format, and there are a number of efforts to extend TIFF for specific applications by registering new tags with Adobe.

TIFF - Tagged Image File Format   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
TIFF is the most common format for storing bitmapped images.
The first version of the TIFF was published by Aldus Corporation in the fall of 1986, after a serie of meetings with various scanner manufacturers and software developers.
Though TIFF is a rich format, it can easily be used for simple scanners and applications as well, because the number of required fields is small.

TIFF: Summary from the Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
This first public release of TIFF was the third major revision of the TIFF format, and although it was not assigned a specific version number, this release may be thought of as TIFF Revision 3.0.
While a TIFF reader must be able to support the parsing and interpretation of all tags it considers necessary, it is certainly not necessary for a TIFF writer to include as many tags as possible in every TIFF file written.
If a TIFF reader needed to display the last 100 rows of a 480-row image, and the bitmaps were divided into 48 strips of 10 rows each, the reader would skip over the first 380 rows and read in the strips stored at the last 10 offsets in the StripOffsets tag array.

 TIFF File Format FAQ
The TIFF format is owned by the same company that also owns PSD though, and as such, it is not very surprising that it has been more than a bit neglected over the last decade or so.
Otherwise, the tag data is stored in any other location within the TIFF file, and a pointer to that location, from the beginning of the file, is written at offset 8 from the beginning of the tag structure.
TIFF editing further obscures the issue as most implementations agree it implies appending at least those modifications that are longer than the original, rather than 'inserting' them, resulting in a file that no reader could hope to read sequentially.

RFC 2306 (rfc2306) - Tag Image File Format (TIFF) - F Profile for Facsimile
TIFF has a very flexible file structure, but the use of some practical guidelines for implementors when writing multi-page TIFF- F files can produce TIFF structures which are easier for readers to process.
TIFF F readers must be able to read data in both bit orders, but the vast majority of facsimile products store data LSB first, exactly as it appears on the telephone line.
Since this document defines a profile of TIFF for facsimile which is suitable for use with fl and white facsimile image data, applications which use this profile or its minimum subset should set the value of the application parameter to "faxbw".

The TIFF file format   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
TIFF or the Tagged Image File Format is a rather old standard that is still very popular today.
TIFF was develop as a universal image file format by Aldus (makers of PageMaker) in 1987.
They have not yet released new versions of TIFF which is not necessarily a bad thing since standards that last long are well supported and understood in the market.

TIFF (Tag Image File Format) is a common format for exchanging raster graphics (bitmap) images between application programs, including those used for scanner images.
A TIFF file can be identified as a file with a ".tiff" or ".tif" file name suffix.
TIFF files can be in any of several classes, including gray scale, color palette, or RGB full color, and can include files with JPEG,

 RFC 2302 (rfc2302) - Tag Image File Format (TIFF) - image/tiff MIME Sub-ty
This definition is further enhanced by introducing the new "application parameter" (section 3.2) to enable identification of a specific subset of TIFF and TIFF extensions for the encoded image data.
The fields defined in the TIFF specification are of a descriptive nature and provide information that is useful to facilitate viewing and rendering of images by a recipient.
TIFF has an extensible structure, so that it is theoretically possible that fields could be defined in the future which could be used to induce particular actions on the part of the recipient, thus presenting additional security risks, but this type of capability is not supported in the referenced TIFF specification.

TIFF constructs for pages, images, and strips allow a TIFF file to preserve the fax data stream structure and the performance advantages that come with it.
All color implementations of TIFF for facsimile MUST implement Profile C. The implementation of a particular profile MUST also implement those profiles on the path that connect it to the root node, and MAY optionally implement profiles not on the path connecting it to the root node.
TIFF orders the color map values so that all the L* values come first, followed by all the a* values and then all the b* values.
