Top-level domain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A top-level domain (TLD) is the last part of an Internet domain name; that is, the letters which follow the final 'dot' of any URL.
was added in the late 1980s by the NIC for the use of NATO, who felt that none of the then existing TLDs adequately reflected their status as an international organization.
TLD, although no longer used, was not deleted until July 1996.

These TLDs are not duplicated by ICANN, resolve in both major roots and can be accessed as you have always done by pointing to the proper name servers in the Inclusive Name Space.
What is important now is that ICANN not be allowed to destroy another TLD by duplicating it and disenfranchising existing domain name holders as they have done with.BIZ.
Therefore, registrant agrees that there is no guarantee that there will not be a colliding TLD issue which may not be resolved in registrant's favor.

 ICANN | Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)
The responsibility for operating each TLD (including maintaining a registry of the second-level domains within the TLD) is delegated to a particular organization.
TLDs with two letters (such as.de,.mx, and.jp) have been established for over 240 countries and external territories and are referred to as "country-code" TLDs or "ccTLDs".
Generally speaking, an unsponsored TLD operates under policies established by the global Internet community directly through the ICANN process, while a sponsored TLD is a specialized TLD that has a sponsor representing the narrower community that is most affected by the TLD.

This general philosophy has resulted in a contemporary model for the organisation of a TLD Registry where the functions of the Registry and those of the Registrars are clearly separate and the Registrars function as competing entities.
There is a wide range of options, each with their proponents; this is the first example of a TLD Registry that intends to operate as far as possible in a multi-lingual environment; existing practice varies considerably, even among the Member States, so that expectations as to what is normal are quite at variance.
Recent experience with the NSI Registry and with other large TLD Registries indicates that within the model of a shared Registry, there is a broad option as to the extent to which the Registry databases centralises registration data and what data is retained and controlled by the Registrars.
