Trinitrotoluene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TNT was first synthesised by Joseph Wilbrand in 1863, and the first large-scale production began in Germany in 1891.
TNT was first made in 1863 by a German chemist Joseph Wilbrand, but its potential was not seen for several years, mainly because it was so hard to detonate and because it was less powerful than other explosives.
Because of the insatiable demand for explosives during the Second World War, TNT was frequently mixed with 40%-80% ammonium nitrate, producing an explosive called amatol.

 TNT
TNT is made by adding 3 NO groups (from nitric acid) to toluene.
TNT has a detonation velocity of 6,940 m/s compared to 1,680 m/s for the detonation of pentane in air, and the 0.34 m/s stoichiometric flame speed of gasoline combustion in air.
The second fact that makes TNT explosive is that it is chemically unstable - the nitro groups are so closely packed that they experience a great deal of strain and hindrance to movement from their neighbouring groups.

 Explosives - Nitroaromatics
The best-known nitroaromatic compound is the explosive TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene).
TNT is classified as a secondary explosive because it is less susceptible to initiation and requires a primary or initiating explosive to ignite it.
TNT was widely used by the military because of its low melting point and its resistance to shock or friction which allows it to be handled, stored, and used with comparative safety.

Composite explosive slurries are obtained by dispersing particulate solid components such as RDX in molten TNT in the presence of a water soluble gum, column 2, lines 10-16.
The practice of the present invention therefore enable preparation of an explosive charge, such as a booster charge, in which the discrete bodies may comprise an explosive material which is less sensitive than that of the matrix material but which provides or contributes nonetheless to the overall output of the charge.

Dynamite is a detonating explosive containing a liquid explosive ingredient (usually nitroglycerine or a similar organic nitrate ester or both) that is uniformly mixed with an adsorbent material such as wood pulp and usually contains materials such as nitrocellulose, sodium and/or ammonium nitrate (definition from United States 40 CFR 173.59).
When an explosive material detonates, the violence and speed of the reactions taking place produce a blast or shock waves (a thin shell of highly compressed air which rapidly expands in all directions from the point that the explosion is initiated).

ES&T Online News: New strategy for biotransforming TNT
Reducing one of the nitro groups on TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) to an amine could render the explosive much easier to bioremediate with a bacterial oxygenase, report Jim Spain and researchers at the U.S Air Force Research Laboratory and the University of Connecticut.
Currently, incineration is the best method to remove toxic and explosive TNT from contaminated sites, but the approach is expensive and causes air pollution.
Spain and his colleagues speculated that the problem is that the nitro substituents in TNT withdraw too much electron density from the ring, inhibiting efficient enzymatic attack on the molecule.

PETERSBURG, FLA. - Researchers at a Florida university have designed a device to detect traces of the explosive TNT underwater and suggest it could be used in anti-terrorism sweeps of ports and waterways after further trials.
The device could be used to detect unexploded ordinance such as mines and shells left behind from training exercises and old battles, or recently planted explosives.
The device is aimed at replacing the current practice of using scuba divers to rummage around in potentially unsafe environments or the imprecise method of an acoustic sensor that often only detects the rough outline of a suspicious shape.
