Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP): Core
Please refer to the current edition of the “Internet Official Protocol Standards” (STD 1) for the standardization state and status of this protocol.
The version of XMPP specified herein is "1.0"; in particular, this encapsulates the stream-related protocols (Use of TLS (Use of TLS), Use of SASL (Use of SASL), and Stream Errors (Stream Errors)), as well as the semantics of the three defined XML stanza types (, , and ).
The Jabber protocols from which XMPP was adapted include a "server dialback" method for protecting against domain spoofing, thus making it more difficult to spoof XML stanzas.

The TOC protocol is ASCII based, and special attention must be placed argument separation.
TOC sends down the protocol version it expects the client to speak and understand.
All user names from clients to TOC should be normalized (spaces removed and lowercased), and therefore are the one exception to the always use quotes rule.

TOC was created by AOL to allow unofficial clients to connect to the AIM service.
TOC was originally used by TiK, an AIM client written in tcl/Tk.
Because TOC is not the official AIM protocol, and no official client has ever used TOC (with the exception of TiK), in addition to not keeping up with the official protocol in terms of functionality, TOC's usability has actually deteriorated since it was released.

Running a dynamic routing protocol on every end-host may be infeasible for a number of reasons, including administrative overhead, processing overhead, security issues, or lack of a protocol implementation for some platforms.
The protocol should ensure after Master election that no state transition is triggered by any Backup router of equal or lower preference as long as the Master continues to function properly.
The protocol should require minimal configuration and overhead in the insecure operation, provide for strong authentication when increased security is required, and allow integration of new security mechanisms without breaking backwards compatible operation.

The WebAuth protocol is designed so that other authentication mechanisms may be used to bootstrap, such as GSS-API or TLS client authentication between servers.
It is used to create post-dated keys in the key ring, to allow for new keys to get generated and distributed among a pool of servers (for load balancing/fail-over) in such a way that all the keys can be updated before the key becomes valid.
An equally valid choice from a protocol perspective would be for the WAS to create its own authentication cookies and not bother with an app token.

remctl Protocol: remctl: Authenticated Remote Command Execution
The remctl network protocol consists of data packets sent from a client to a server or a server to a client over a TCP connection.
The new protocol only uses the flag field outside of the encrypted section of the packet for initial negotiation and closes the connection if the flags aren't what was expected (avoiding a down-negotiation attack).
In the old protocol, the server calculated and sent a MIC back to the client, which then verified that the command as received by the server was correct.

 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1
The protocol versioning policy is intended to allow the sender to indicate the format of a message and its capacity for understanding further HTTP communication, rather than the features obtained via that communication.
The number is incremented when the changes made to the protocol add features which do not change the general message parsing algorithm, but which may add to the message semantics and imply additional capabilities of the sender.
Since the protocol version indicates the protocol capability of the sender, a proxy/gateway MUST NOT send a message with a version indicator which is greater than its actual version.

Compliance (and non-compliance) should only be governed by the protocol's parties and not the protocol itself.

AOL gave the Open Source community TOC, and most people seemed to think at the time that this was a Really Good Thing, and that AOL was really trying to be friends with us.
