I was searching discussion groups' archives in Lynx over a 15Kbps modem, and in the event that I could even find an 808 for sale, it was sold by the time I found the post.
That kind of thing was typical in the early 90s before Harmony Central and Ebay, when it was much harder to buy gear like this.
At least I still had 808 State over this guy, the last little thread holding my project together.

The most famous early electronica production that featured the 808 is probably Cybotron's album Clear.
"Planet Rock" is 808 and not much more, and it became one of the most influential tracks in black electro music.

The sounds of the TR-808 were and still are very often used in Hip-Hop, House, Electro and many forms of electronic dance music.

The 303’s pitch controls etc. that were supposed to be used to pre-programme the desired sound were being used in real time, creating a whole host of squelching noises etc. And the 808, although not abused in the same way, gave house a sound of it’s own with the machines unique thumping 4/4 kick drum.

The 808 enjoyed marginal success on the occasional record (Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' for example) but it wasn't a runaway success for Roland when it was released.

A lot of people see the Drumatix as a poor mans TR-808, but there's very little to choose between them.
The 808 has separate outputs as standard and a few more sounds, but the snappy snare and hihats sound the same on the 606.

There is a nice program by Propeller Head called Rebirth that incorporates a 909 an 808 and two 303s (the 303 is an old Roland analogue bass synth even more infamous for defining the sound of electronic music).
These are the Roland Tr-909 and the Roland Tr-808.
This interface was a large part of the Tr line's popularity and has been copied by many drum machines since.

The sound was huge, the interface was great, and the oscillators were extremely stable, but some of the components (the little chrome switches) were prone to failure, and it was difficult to work on due to the design of the modules.

While disco grooves and 808 drumlines were used in the creation of early chicago house, the 303 really was used also very extensively at that time.
House basically evolved from disco records mashed together over 808 drum lines, synthetic bass was not necessary because there were all sorts of grooves on the records.
Dr. Dre popularized the 808 in his NWA days, and to this day both he and his proteges use it a lot and pay it respects.
