  The Timex-Sinclair 2068.
The TS2068 is a second generation home computer from Imex Computer Corporation, the folks who brought you the TS1000, the first computer to retail for less than $100.
The sloping top of the TS2068 is dominated by a large 42-key full-travel Chiclet style keyboard that is a step beyond the membrane keyboard of the TS1000 but short of the standard typewriter style.
As an owner of a TS2068, I think it is comforting to know that Timex is committed to designing high-quality peripherals and software priced for the family budget--almost every additional piece of equipment will sell for less than $100 retail.

Timex Sinclair 2068 Notes and FAQs
The tc2068/tc2048 use resistors to decouple the ula and z80 as in the spectrum while the ts2068 uses a tristated buffer.
The result is the tc2048 is close to 100% compatible with the Spectrum, the tc2068 + emulator is about the same, then followed by the ts2068 w/ emulator at about 97%.
-The BEU was to be the Bus Expansion Unit, it was to be the killer add-on, giving the TS2068 the ability to use microdrives, and adding a centronics parallel port for a 80 column printer.

The TS2068 was introduced to North America in late 1983 as an enhanced version of the original ZX Spectrum.
Edge Connector: The edge connector on the TS2068 is based on the one used in the TS1000 and TS1500, and is not directly compatible with peripherals originally produced for the ZX Spectrum, although many vendors produced convertors that allow common devices to be connected.
Additional information for the TS2068 is available in the Timex Reference section of this FAQ, which you may want to read in conjunction with the Timex TS2068 Technical Manual.

Timex Sinclair 2068 - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The Timex Sinclair 2068 (TS2068), released in November 1983, was Timex Sinclair's fourth and last home computer for the U.S. market.
It derived from the 48K ZX Spectrum, and followed Timex's ZX81-based TS1000 and TS1500, and the Spectrum-based TS2048.
The TS2048 was essentially a 48K Spectrum with improved graphics modes – see below – and an integrated Kempston joystick interface.

 Timex History
The TS2068, related Skyrme, was to either have been a "cleaned-up" 48k spectrum or a totally re-engineered design.
Most of the information on proposed products for the TS2068 (and TS3068) will never be made public due to a myriad of legal reasons and the engineers involved in the project have all gone their separate ways.
They took the TS2068 and made some modifications, like a new version of the SLCD chip for PAL TVs, replaced the buffers between the SLCD and Z80 bus with resistors and modified the expansion connector to be Spectrum compatible, creating the TC2068.

TS2068 has an additional 8K ROM extension, cartridge port, two joystick ports and AY-3-8912 sound chip with extra Sinclair BASIC commands to support these devices (STICK, SOUND, RESET, FREE, ON ERROR, DELETE).
The TS2068 BASIC is only partly compatible with the Spectrum.
TS2068 works with 15 volts, insted of 9V like the Spectrum.

This section, which you may want to read in conjunction with the Timex TS2068 Technical Manual, discusses the three (official) Timex machines that closely resemble the ZX Spectrum; the TS2068, TC2068 and TC2048.
The TS2068 is an American machine operating at 60Hz on a 110v power supply and generates an NTSC television picture (just like the Spectrums sold by mail order in the US by Sinclair) but with a TS1000 (ZX81) compatible expansion bus.
In the TS2068 and TC2048 it is used to support the extended BASIC and cartridges plugged into the dock.

Retailing for £125;125 (GBP) for the 16KB and £175 for the 48KB model, the Spectrum was the first mainstream audience home computer in the UK, similar in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA (the C64 also being the main rival to the Spectrum in the UK market).
An enhanced version of the Spectrum with better sound, graphics and other modifications was marketed in the USA by Timex as the TS2068.
A number of current leading games developers and development companies began their careers on the ZX Spectrum, including Peter Molyneux (ex-Bullfrog Games), Shiny Entertainment, and Ultimate Play The game (now known as Rare, Inc, maker of many famous titles for the Super NES and Nintendo 64 game consoles).

I suspect it was the ROM as shipped with the UK, and the Melbourne House ROM disassembly given the lack of documentation kept at Sinclair.
The best side effect of the TS2068 is the production in Portugal of the Timex TC2048, which drops the buggered up US ROM in favour of a slightly modified version of the UK original, but keeps the extra graphics modes.
Releasing it in the UK was an afterthought to try and stop Sinclair going bust, which it didn't hence the Amstrad buy out.

The TS2068 was a completely different computer with the Spectrum as its roots.
Timex of Portugal, no doubt encouraged by the Spectrum's popularity in Europe, continued to sell the TS2068 and offered the TS2048 as the TC2068 and TC2048 in parts of Europe, notably Portugal and Poland (got this info from two fellows from each of those countries who mentioned that the Timex computers were very popular there).

The Timex Sinclair 2068 (TS2068), released in November 1983, was TimexSinclair's fourth and last home computer for the U.S. market.
Since the TS2068 "fixed" the Spectrum's four main weaknesses compared to its 8-bit contemporary rivals – poor graphicsand sound, the "dead flesh" keyboard and absence of joystick ports – it is perhaps regrettable that Sinclair did not adoptthe machine, modify it for greater compatibility and sell it as an enhanced Spectrum in its home market.
It was a considerableimprovement over the Spectrum+, which it preceded by a year, and in many respects over the Spectrum 128, which althoughannounced in May 1985 did not appear until February 1986.

The TS2068 only has 48K of base RAM, but the SE has also been expanded to use a variation of the ZX Spectrum 128 paging system to increase the base RAM to 144K.
Software development is ongoing, with TS2068 and ZX Interface II emulators having already been written.
