TSOL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TSOL is short for True Sounds of Liberty, but they are only rarely referred to by their full name.
TSOL has always been a band to change both their sound and their members.
Their first releases are very similar to the highly political punk of the late 70s, but in 1981 with the release of "Dance With Me", they moved toward what would today be considered near gothic in themes.

Punk fans shouldn’t miss upcoming TSOL concert (printable version)
TSOL — which stands for True Sounds of Liberty — formed in 1978 in Huntington Beach, Calif., as a tight, fast hardcore punk band.
TSOL released two near-classics albums, “Dance With Me” and “Beneath the Shadows,” in the early 1980s, combining the aggression of hardcore with keyboards and overt gothic rock influences, becoming a touchstone for bands like AFI.
It was after this peak that Grisham and Barnes left the group, and TSOL then evolved over the ’80s into something else entirely, starting with more alternative rock leanings and eventually copping a biker-rock sound much like The Cult.

On TSOL Live (recorded at a California date in January '88), the band sloughs off a full set of Change Today-forward originals as well as who-cares covers of "All Along the Watchtower" and "Roadhouse Blues." Well-recorded, but pretty tepid.
The original TSOL lineup (minus drummer Todd Barnes, who died of drug-related causes in December 1999) got together again in the late '90s as a fully functioning, forward-looking unit.
Anyone writing off the reunited TSOL as an anachronism or nostalgia act is sorely mistaken, and this record proves it.

Agnostic Front with TSOL on "The Unity Tour" - PopMatters Concert Review
Agnostic Front, started in the early 1980s by guitarist Vinnie Stigma and vocalist Roger Miret, are from the rough urban streets of NYC, tell their stories in two minute diatribes and bear their piss and vinegar on their flesh in tattooed glory.
TSOL came on first (actually third, but I missed the first two bands drinking beer across the street at Volpi's, where I got to listen to the joys of accordion music; but that's another review) and immediately got to work, dazzling the crowd with their melodic onslaught.
For many years it actually seemed like TSOL themselves (in whatever lineup happened to record) had succeeded in fucking the dead, that is, fucking the dead corpse of their name playing a lame brand of hairspray rock.

 Heckler Magazine #51- TSOL
The original band released a six song EP in 1980 that introduced Ron Emory’s sizzling guitar to the punk world, and followed it up with a brilliant turn to the diverse and dramatic punk of Dance With Me, leaving some orthodox hardcore fans confused.
Still, they drew even bigger crowds with their great songwriting and Jack’s charisma, and were playing big shows like the S.I.R. Studio riot in 1983, when Jack famously got the 2000 person crowd to sit down to prove that it was the cops who were rioting.
A lot of TSOL is drama, that early stuff has drama, that show tune thing, and there’s a lot of that which I didn’t get so into this because I’d been away from it for so many years.

When T.S.O.L. blasted onto the Orange County punk explosion in 1979 with white face paint, 6’ plus frames and blazing punk anthems, they were automatically a force to be reckoned with.
Their previous band, Vicious Circle, had already established themselves in the South Bay and Orange County with large crowds and several riots at historical venues such as the Cuckoo’s Nest and the Fleetwood.
With the boost of the now classic Poshboy EP that introduced the songs “Superficial Love” and “Abolish Government”, TSOL picked up where Vicious Circle left off, but with an armory full of ammunition.
