RAFA Eastern Area - Aviation - TSR2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
There have been numerous books and documentaries made on the subject of TSR2, however, what is very inconclusive is the verdict on what sort of aeroplane it would have been if it hadn't been abandoned.
TSR2 was first flown by test pilot Roland Beaumont at Boscombe Down on Sept 27th 1964.
The TSR2 project has been part of my families history, I'm not sure why, my uncle was in the RAF at the time, and had a very, very minor role, so I'm led to believe.

BAC TSR.2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
It was not until the autumn of 1960 that all branches of the government finally agreed with the development of the TSR.2, and the contract was signed on 6 October.
The TSR.2 had still not flown in July 1964, but cost estimates were now at 240 million, with an unit price of 2.3 to 2.8 million.
The TSR.2 was intended to cruise at Mach 2.05 at an altitude of 36000ft (10100m), and to achieve supersonic speeds at treetop height.

Another competitor was the Blackburn Buccaneer as elements in the government favoured that aircraft, mainly from their Naval background prejudices or Treasury cost cutting.
The TSR2 was the last UK independant large bomber aircraft ending the heritage of the Lancaster, Canberra, V bombers.
TSR2 could have continued in service until around now and so the Jaguar and Tornado may not have been built.

BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION TSR.2 - HISTORY
However, the TSR.2 was certainly a serious worry to the Americans, being vastly more capable than the F-111 and could have made a serious dent in the F-111's export prospects.
TSR.2 was long gone, and all we had in its place was an aircraft of nowhere near the capability.
BAC survived the TSR.2 cancellation; the only major project not cancelled was the Anglo-French Concorde supersonic transport, which while never being a massive commercial success, gave BAC valuable experience and prestige both with advanced aircraft and with international cooperation.

SAPMA (South Australian Plastic Modellers Association) - Reference Library
The TSR2 had many teething problems as most advanced designs do, with virtually every system in the plane being new, but this was nothing compared to the political problems that would eventually bring about it's demise.
Most concerning of the many problems plaguing the aircraft, was the vibration problems in the landing gear. The vibrations were so bad that it temporarily blinded the crew on landing, this potentially fatal problem was caused by the vibration of the landing gear being at the same frequency as the human eyeball.
The TSR2 was no slouch with the chase plane, a mach2 Lightning, being left well behind even after engaging afterburners on its engines!  Despite the positive advancements the TSR2 program was under concerted attack.

They were rebuilding a hanger (which I already knew) to house the prototype Concord they have at the museum, which has been (and still is) parked outside (in the ‘crying shame’ section…).
As for the TSR2, the criminal destruction of the few that were built (the one at Duxford is cobbled together from bits and scrap, fine though it looks) beggars belief.
I have a big interest in the ‘period’ in wargaming terms, but the nearest I can get to it, in my own bizarre way, if probably another go at a (Gerry Anderson based) UFO game that Ivan and I are planning for club use.

The TSR2 was going to be under budget for each aircraft bought, but the US government didnt want a competing aircraft to the F-111, which was being developed at the time.
The TSR2 was going to be the next gen plane of its time, and indeed a lot of the technology developed for it went straight into the Tornado and eurofighter later on.
As an interesting side note, the cockpit on the TSR2 was quite a way forward of the front undercarraige, and when the plane landed it caused vibration in the forward fuselage.

The specifications that were set out for the 'plane were right on the capabilities of the technology of the time and I think it would have taken many years to sort it out.
No doubt, with enough time and money, the TSR2 would have been a world beater but there is absolutely no doubt that it would have overun the proposed budget by a factor of three or four.

Last month we looked at the history of the TSR2 so this month let's have a look at some of the potential colour schemes it could have worn.
It seems likely that had Mountbatten not interfered, the Australian Air Force would have purchased the TSR2 and would probably still be flying it today.
The aircraft supplied to ARDU (Aircraft Research and Development Unit) have the potential to be the most colourful: camouflaged uppersurfaces with White sides and undersurfaces or even International Orange and White are two options.

I see the attraction of a what-if TSR2 pretty clearly, sure, but that is something to put together yourself from gash sheets.
Yes, if you always wanted to do a (say) 617 Sq TSR2, then having a sheet available just makes life a little easier for you, and there's nothing "second-hand" in that.
I guess the TSR2 is just a special case, and it wouldn't work for many, if any, other types.

The Prime Minister of the day, Harold Wilson, made a comment that as a renowned economist he should have been ashamed of - that a TSR2 was going to cost more than a prewar destroyer.

The cancelation of the TSR2 deprived the British and the west of the one of the finest aircraft designs ever.
Although Wilson's cancelling of the TSR.2 (let's make washing machines instead!) was a massive loss for the RAF, the cancelling of the P.1154 was probably the worst for the British aerospace industry.
While the TSR.2 was a superlative aircraft, it was expensive and complex and not very appealing to any country other than America, Britain and Australia (and possibly Canada).

The TSR2 was not underpowered, ont he first flight, they were only allowed to use 97% of thrust, later (it only flew 24 times, or 13hrs 9mins), it flew over mach 1 with only 1 engine working half properly 1/3 of afterburner on one engine).
And apparently it was under range, which hasnever been mentioned before.
