Capital & Class: TUC: From the General Strike to New Unionism, The
The author sets out to write a history of the Tuc from 1926 to the present day, as seen from the perspective of the General Secretaries and central figures such as leaders of the large general unions.
Focusing on the roles of key actors in the development of the TUC and using extensive quotations from their collected diaries, speeches and papers,Taylor gives the reader a strong sense of the character of these men (and they are, with the notable exceptions of Barbara Castle and Margaret Thatcher, all men).
The strength of this approach to historical narrative is that the reader is left with a vivid impression of the people involved in shaping the institution and its policies-an institution that has influenced the policies of some governments at crucial political and economic moments.

Whilst the TUC guide notes that these positive developments have no doubt been helped by the government's employment law reforms and by continuing low levels of unemployment, it also says that imaginative, targeted organising union campaigns have also played a considerable part.
TUC General Secretary John Monks said: 'When it first started out the TUC Academy was very much seen as an experiment, but five years on, it has established itself as one of the most effective means of attracting and training the next generation of union organisers.

This platitude is absurd when we recollect that the TUC at that period was controlled by O'Brien and Co. and his philosophic 'Yes-men'.
The creation of the Council of Irish Unions inside of a body that was representative of the aspirations of the workers of the 32 Counties, regardless of the National origin of their organisations, was superfluous to say the least.
The anomalous situation in the TUC, as representative of 32 Counties, six of whom were belligerents, and as such were rather embarrassing to the ruling-clique in the 26 Counties who were formally neutral, was very opportunistically exploited by O'Brien and Co. as the pivot around which the split tendency revolved.
