TV3 (New Zealand) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TV3, is a commercial television station in New Zealand and was the first televison network that was not controlled by the government.
TV3 initial aimed was to provide a regionally based television service, with linked studios based in each of the four areas (Auckland, Wellington, Regional North Island, and South Island).
TV3 held the free-to-air Rugby Union coverage rights from 2000 until the end of 2005 when Prime Television New Zealand secured them for 2006.

New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority Decision re TV3 News
TV3 said that it stood by its reporter's statement that the plutonium in MOX was suitable for use in nuclear weaponry.
TV3, the broadcasters of the news item which is the subject of this complaint, knowingly or recklessly, unfairly and repeatedly, disseminated factually inaccurate statements concerning recent shipments of nuclear fuel through the Tasman Sea - statements the contents of which they had previously, and repeatedly, been warned were factually inaccurate.
TV3, the Authority notes, conceded that the shipment was not weapons-grade, although it argued that it was weapons-useable.

TV3 stated that Standard 7 did not apply as the news was unclassified and the footage complained about was part of a news programme.
As to Standard 9, TV3 considered that the footage would not have disturbed or alarmed child viewers as it was “intended to be funny rather than risqué”.

TV3 competed against a bid from Prime and a TVNZ and Sky TV joint bid, he said.
TV3 was particularly pleased with the win as there would be more interest in the build-up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, to be held in New Zealand.
TV3 was concerned that common ownership between Sky TV and Prime meant that free-to-air rights might not be available to either free-to-air broadcasters to both sports event and programme rights in the future.

TV3 director of news and current affairs Mark Jennings said the station was likely to appeal against the "dangerous precedent" that could result in courts dictating the content of programmes dealing with political or current events.
Though TV3 might air programmes with national-interest consequences, that did not make it a "public body", which meant it could not be performing public functions.
TV3 had entered the public arena by choosing to run a leaders' debate, which expert testimony from Victoria University political science professor Stephen Levine suggested was likely to influence the election result.

In his decision, Justice Chambers stated that "There was public disclosure of private facts which, TV3 had conceded, were offensive and objectionable to a reasonable person of ordinary sensibilities." He noted that "No one was denying TV3’s right to broadcast a documentary on the topic of poverty and child prostitution in Fiji.
In addition to breaching the children’s right to privacy, the Court found that TV3 had breached the Code of Broadcasting practice in that it did not deal "justly and fairly" with the children in the programme.
ECPAT NZ spokesperson and barrister, Denise Ritchie, welcomed the findings of the High Court as a landmark decision in the battle to protect the rights of all children.

Scoop: Advance NZ calls on TV3 to reconsider exclusion
Advance NZ does not see the policies of Jim Anderton's Progressive Party or United Future as particularly relevant to solving the fundamental driver behind the issues their parties purport to address.
By excluding minor parties from the leaders debate TV3 are in fact undermining the essential intent of the democratic process which is to ensure the widest possible presentation of policies so voters have the opportunity to make an informed decision.
If TV3 excludes the leaders of two parties, both with significant representation in our Parliament, on this occasion the question must be asked as to where that decision may lead in the future.

Gillon rescinded the statement immediately and apologised for the joke, but this isn't good enough for some MPs who seem more intent on continuing the mudslinging of late (not to mention the outrageous cries for "accountability") rather than doing anything for the common good.
Former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley seemed the most outraged at Gillon's comment as she was interviewed by TV3.
After first attacking Gillon's behaviour she went on to explain her disdain, saying that "bestiality" is "pornographic," and that this sort of behaviour, besides being illegal, was "intolerable." Her language and use of pronouns made it unclear what, specifically, was illegal --- the joke itself, making a joke in Parliament or buggering sheep.
