		The name ‘Taara’ comes from the Heinrici Chronicon Livoniae (The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia), which described the Roman Catholic crusade against Estonians in the 13th century.
		This has been interpreted to mean “O Taara, help!” and it has been conjectured that one (or even the main god) of ancient Estonians was called Taara.
		In contemporary Estonia this trend is represented by the Taara, and the Earth-Believers Earth House (founded in 1995) which involves roughly 200 people.

		In different versions of the chronicle, the name is written differently: Tharapita, Tarapitha, Tharaphitam, etc. - leading to the conclusion that the name Taarapita is the most suitable for use in Estonian.
		Analysing the two parts of the name - taara and pita - while also considering kindred languages results in the interpretation of the name Taarapita as "Taara (is) great " or Taara-great.
		Taara itself, however, could be a loan from the name of the Scandinavian thunder god þórr.
