Tabelbala, situated at 500 meters above sea-level, is a very isolated oasis at the foot of the Erg er Raoui, in between this zone of sand dunes and a little mountainous region of about 700 meters high.
The inhabitants of Tabelbala have survived through an oasis economy based on date palms, gardens and the herding of goats, donkeys, some sheep and a few dromedaries that were cared for by Chaamba herdsmen.
Moreover, Tabelbala has been a place of rest and supply for the caravans coming from Morocco, all this at least until the beginning of the twentieth century.

Southern Songhai is spoken mainly along and south of the Niger river; it includes Zarma (Djerma), a major language of Niger with 2 million speakers, Dendi in Benin, and in Mali Koyraboro Senni with 400,000 speakers, Humburi Senni, and Koyra Chiini.
The much smaller Northern Songhai is a group of heavily Berber -influenced dialects spoken in the Sahara, including Tadaksahak in northern Mali, Tasawaq and Tagdal in northern Niger, the extinct Emghedeshie of Agadez, and Korandje on the Algeria - Morocco border at Tabelbala.
While varieties of Tamasheq are the main influence on the others, Korandje appears to be influenced more by Northern Berber.

His Goumiers brought a native back from reconnaissance patrol who told Pein that a large Moroccan harka of Berber warriors was massing at Tabelbala at the base of the Hammada de Guir.
Pein was about 150 km south of Timimoun, and as Tabelbala was some 400 km from Timimoun he didn't see this as an immediate threat.
The only problem with this, was that by the time Pein heard of the harka at Tabelbala on the 16th, it was in fact at Charouine just 40 km southwest of Timimoun (oh the joys of communication).
