 Tablature
The rhythmic symbols of tablature tell when to start a note, but often there is no indication of when to stop sounding it, so duration is at the discretion of the performer to a greater extent than is the case in conventional musical notation.
In tablature, a bend can show how far the string is to be bent, when the string is to be released (denoted by an r), or that it is a bend to an unspecific note.
Other variants of lute tablature use numbers rather than letters, write the stops on the lines rather than in the spaces, or even invert the entire staff so that the lowest notest are on top and the highest are at the bottom.

 Reading Guitar Tablature
A tablature is a form of music notation that is designed for a particular musical instrument, for example by specifically indicating keys or fingerings.
Obviously, tablatures aren't as generally useful as standard notation, since they can only be easily read by players of one particular kind of instrument.
In guitar tablature, each line represents a particular a string, and the spaces between the lines are not used.

 Reading Banjo Tablature
Tablature provides an easy way to read and write music as it is played on the banjo, guitar, or other stringed instruments.
The tablature staff looks much the same as standard notation, but instead of each line representing a particular note, each line represents a string on the banjo.
The letters on the lines on the left side of the tablature (D-B-G-D-G) represent the tuning of each string when it is played "open" (without holding the string down at a fret with the left hand).

Tablature was very popular for three centuries but then declined in the nineteenth century, only to be revived in the mid-twentieth century by American folk- and country-musicians with their guitars, banjos, mandolins, and mountain dulcimers.
Tablature and staff notation have a superficial similarity to the eye in that they both use a background of parallel horizontal lines.
Tablature lines and numbers make it very easy to know where to put your fingers on the strings to play the individual notes, but they don't tell you how long a particular note should last.

Tablature staffs follow the same rules as non-tablature staffs for using time values from the previous chord if no time value is specified on the current chord.
A slide is indicated on output on tablature staffs as a slanted line between 2 fret numbers on a string.
Since ties are not printed on tablature staff, and input notation for tablature slides is like what is used for slurs on ordinary staffs, if you want a curved line like a tie or slur on a tablature or tabnote staff, you have to use a phrase mark.

 Mandolin Tablature
Tablature is one of the oldest forms of written music...it is a visual approach to reading music that gives you an exact position of finger placement on your instrument's fingerboard.
There are many advantages of tablature that many are not aware of...for instance, if you use different tunings, tablature does not deviate from the standard number positioning; whereas, standard notation has to be re-learned for every tuning.
Upon learning tablature, you can cross reference any place you may be on the staff and learn more about standard notation.

In tablature, these chords inherit their length from the length of the previous chord and the rhythm flag is omitted in the printed output (unless you explicitly ask for a flag on every note with %%taballflags).
Like tablature chords, rests inherit their length from the previous chord or rest and they are only drawn if they explicitly have a rhythm factor.
Here are some examples for tablature slurs: Please note, that the first tie in the second example is not possible in music because the opening parenthesis in the chord is not immediately closed in the next note.

Tablature is read from left to right (again, the same as standard notation) - i.e notes that appear to the right of another note are played after the first note.
If we continue through the complete tablature example, we find that it corresponds to an Emajor chord (low to high: EBEG#BE), followed by a different Emajor chord (EG#BE), then the notes E F# G# F# E D# and finally a repeat of the second Emajor chord.

 Banjo Tablature
Tablature is one of the oldest forms of written music...it is a visual approach to reading music that gives you an exact position of slide placement on your instrument's slideboard.
For instance, a 1 2 3 4 would be counted out evenly as beats...If you were to tap your foot in a rhythmic manner as you count to four methodically, you have the beat of the piece.
Each downbeat would be a thumbstroke with your right hand or middle finger; each off beat, represented by the "and" symbol, would be played with an upstroke with your right hand index finger...(unless you're left handed and then you would be picking with your left hand).

Acoustic guitar Tablature (Tab) & Midi - Downloads Page
Tablature is an excellent way in which to put guitar compositions and arrangements onto paper for learning and teaching purposes, and also to enable you to remember tunes from one year to the next, a definite factor if a tune isn't played for a year or two.
One of the major complaints about tablature used to be that it didn't show any timing value so you had to have heard the tune first before you could use the 'finger-map' of the tablature to play it.
Tablature is no different no matter what the tuning; it still shows the fret numbers which show where you are to put your fingers of your fretting hand (left for most of us!) onto the guitar neck/fretboard.
