Machine Guarding eTool: Saws - Table Saws
With hand-fed saws, the operator adjusts the height and angle of the blade.
Self-feed or power table saws are equipped with rollers or a conveyor system to hold the lumber and force-feed it into the saw blade.
Attach a brake to the motor’s arbor to stop the saw from coasting after the power has been cut off, or have the operator remain at the saw station after the motor is shut off, until the blade stops turning.

 Woodworking.com - Woodworking Times...Table Saw Maintenance
The table remains in a fixed horizontal position and the arbor tilts.
Because all table saws are made of parts which are bolted and screwed together, these parts loosen and slip due to vibration.
The space in the board which is removed by the saw blade is called a “kerf.” The splitter is used to keep the saw-kerf open; this keeps the wood from binding.

Table saw tuning and repair on a budget
I bought the saw as a stopgap measure to keep me from spending $2000 on a proper cabinet maker's table saw.
One of the first things I'd noticed about the saw when I bought it was that the rip fence was very crooked.
I was accustomed to using a table saw with a sliding table, so never thought very highly of these miter gauge things.

Table Saw Basics - Alignment - NewWoodworker.com LLC
With the exception of a benchtop saw or two that do not have them, miter slots are the one constant on table saws that cannot be changed.
Most saws hold this adjustment for a very long time so it is worth the effort to get it right the first time around.
On most saws, there are two mounting points, one off the back of the saw and the second near the back of the blade in the throat opening.

 The Portable Table Saw
Portable table saws, which are occasionally referred to as bench table saws, do not come with built-in stands, but leg sets can be purchased separately or fabricated without much difficulty.
The cutting surface on portable table saws is smaller than on shop models (roughly one and a half by two feet square, rather than approximately two feet by three and a half feet).
Situated beyond the saw blade, the splitter separates the wood to prevent the stock from binding on the blade.

 Table Saw Accessories
The sliding table for the Preac Table Saw was developed for the model maker who has a need to crosscut wood up to 4" wide and wants more support for longer pieces of wood on either side of the blade.
The table can also be adjusted to be square by loosening the rear socket cap screw and the front flat head screw with the hex key provided, and aligning with a square against the blade and front bar.
When first using the Sliding Table with the blade set at the highest position, slowly slide the table to the rear and front positions with the stop screws in position so the blade may remove any excess aluminum in the blade slot due to slight variations in the saw table and sliding table.

Table Saw Ratings, Table Saw Review Ratings
Six contractor table saws are tested for assembly and disassembly time (for mobility,) motor power, drive mechanism and alignment, precision and ease of adjustments.
We found three table saws with average 5-star ratings from dozens of users, including the Grizzly G1023S budget cabinet saw, the Delta 36-675 contractor saw, and the Powermatic 1660802K, a special version of the Powermatic 66 cabinet saw for home workshops.
Most table saws get reviews and ratings from only a few users here, so the ratings are not as useful as those at Amazon.com, though the two sources tend to agree.

Choosing a Table Saw - Articles at Woodcraft
The tables are usually too short (front to back) to accept most aftermarket fences; the tables of many bench top table saws are constructed of aluminum, or composites, and molded to accept only the fence made by the saw's manufacturer.
Motor horsepower of such saws tends to be an irrelevancy, as almost all manufacturers rate the saws at maximum brake horsepower, something that is not usable on a day-to-day basis.
Contractor's saws are lighter than cabinet saws, but still four to six times heavier than bench top models; the motor drives the arbor through a single belt, which increases the possible depth of cut by as much as 1/8" (over direct drive saws) on many models.

Grampa's Workshop - woodworking, woodworking projects, woodworking plans
If a large fixed table saw could even be afforded, I couldn't have afforded the space for it, so I had to come up with an arrangement which was both affordable and functional.
Since the saw was 21" front to back, the bottom needed to be 21" D plus the 3/4" thickness of the back, so 21 3/4".
Sit your saw on it and mark the mounting holes on the platform, when the saw is positioned just right - not binding on the sides or back.

Woodworking Table Saws at Southern Tool Catalog
A table saw purchase should be made carefully to avoid getting either a machine that doesn't meet shop needs, or one that leaves too little money for other important tools.
Cheaper saws make rough cuts, wear out quickly, don't hold their adjustments, and are more prone to dangerous kickbacks.
Plenty of power for any task: motors in these saws are rated at 3 or 5 horsepower, which is enough to handle any wood up to full cutting depth (typically 3 1/8" for either kind of saw).

Table Saws - Table Saw Reviews, Best Table Saws
In general, however, the most recent reviews of contractor saws and cabinet table saws emphasize that table flatness, arbor runout, and fence and miter gauge accuracy are quite acceptable on all the models compared.
But newer table saws have surpassed many of the brands and models that were favorites as recently as last year.
Table saw models don't change often, so newer table saws are at a disadvantage when counting up top picks in reviews over recent years.

It tilts to the right. This is a fine saw, but it doesn’t have any of the three key features we prefer: left tilt, good dust collection, or two cast-iron wings. The right wing is a tableboard, but you can replace it with a solid, cast-iron wing for $80.The faces on the fence aren't easy to replace.

The table saw is a useful addition to any workshop as it allows you to rip long planks of wood very easily.
However, there are alternatives to the table saw for those who are not yet ready to spend the money (or who do not have the space) for this tool.
Alternatives to the table saw range from using a circular saw to rip the wood by using a long straight ruler (or second plank of wood) as a guide to building your own table saw by making a table that you can clamp a circular saw underneath (pointing upwards).

Choosing and Using Table Saws | THIS OLD HOUSE
If you're frustrated with the clumsiness and lack of accuracy of a circular saw in ripping material (cutting it to width along the board's length) and in trimming small pieces, you may want to consider a bench-top table saw.
A bench-top saw is not as accurate as a larger and more expensive contractor's saw or stationary shop saw, and it struggles a bit more with thick pieces of lumber.
Turn the page to learn what to look for in a table saw and which saw is right for you, as well as some helpful techniques from This Old House master carpenter Norm Abram.

NPR : Table-Saw Technology Aims to Save Fingers
All Things Considered, December 7, 2004 · Table saws are great at ripping through wood, but the power tools can also cause serious injuries, sending upwards of 40,000 people to emergency rooms each year.
Gass argues that power toolmakers have an ethical obligation to add the safety device to their saws before thousands more people are seriously injured or maimed.
The industry counters that the technology is unproven and may not withstand heavy use, and notes that it would cost tens of millions of dollars to retool assembly lines to incorporate it.

Same issues hold true regarding the need for table board and legs, although the Skarie guy said the Biesemeyer commercial could go up to 40 inch without support legs, but it's not wise with a contractor's saw because of the danger of tipping.
Trying to move the saw with the existing base risks bending the fence rails and/or throwing off the alignment as the 50-inch table rises off the floor.
