Topic: Tableaux vivant

  The Newtown Bee
The committee for the tableaux vivant planned for sometime in October 2005 consists of award-winning filmmaker Amber Edwards as producer/director; lighting designer Marilyn Rennagel as set/lighting designer; Patrick Brady, musical director of the Broadway show The Producers, as musical director; and Town Historian Dan Cruson as narrator and historical consultant.
Tableaux attendees' imagination would need to come into play as some of the tableau scenes unfold because, as Ms Edwards said, "You can't recreate a colonial cabin in eight minutes." Scenes would be flexible so they would not be the same shape, she noted.
Tickets for the tableaux vivant would be sold in advance with general seating on a first come, first served basis.

In the late 1880s, the mainstream popularity of tableaux vivants was revived by the use of posing as an element of professional stage performance in the late nineteenth century.
Tableaux vivants of this kind became source material for Maud Allan, who would become the most famous and successful Salome dancer and a progenitor of striptease.

Artfacts.Net: Tableaux Vivants - Living Pictures and Attitudes in Photography, Film, and Video
Tableaux vivants are an art form in their own right, shifting between the theatrical and the pictorial, between performance and silence, history and vivid presence.
Tableaux vivants are, as it were, a corporeal appropriation of art history, which keeps traditional images alive through a permanent process of transformation.
Dating back to classical antiquity, tableaux vivants were later integrated, as political and evocative imagery, in the festive pageants of the Renaissance and Baroque periods and, ever since the Middle Ages, in Catholic liturgical processions, mainly in Southern Europe and Latin America, before they eventually came to serve late 18th Century bourgeois ascendancy.

A restaurant is always theater and Tableaux's spacious set is stunning: gold wallpaper, vermilion and fl parquet floor, moss-green velvet drapes, and hundreds of candles, both faux and genuine, furnishing the only light - scintillating from countless cut-glass crystals and reflecting from gold-framed mirrors ever so artfully cracked.
Tableaux is buoyant and leisurely and, as with all good theater, it satisfies on several levels.
Tableaux will be as indispensible for some as Matisse, pearl earrings, or proper wineglasses for a Bordeaux.

Although not listed in the actual lyrics, Downie sings "roman-a-clef" and "tableaux vivant" at the end of "Lionized." No doubt dating back to his days studying film, the two terms are used in film making.
A "roman-a-clef" is literally translated as a "novel with a key," and is sometimes used to describe a story that reveals its hook or major plot device only after the rest of the plot has been revealed.
A "tableaux vivant," or "living painting" is a term adopted from the stage referring to a group of actors portraying a well known scene from history or myth that is so well known it requires no dialogue.

The patrons were often wealthy and the venues were often their parlors; in this period tableaux vivant was merely a distraction for the rich.
Over time, however, tableaux vivant found its way out of the parlor and into the repertoire of theater technique.
While relatively short lived, Liminal performed Tableaux Vivants for an unusual array of events, including a holiday party for KATU-TV (we’re not sure why we ever agreed to that silver body paint), PICA’s final Dada Ball, at Liminal’s gallery (the Metropolitan Art Studio) and at private house parties and fundraisers.

An installation of a wooden jetty strains under the burden of a towering mass of yellow lentils; a tableaux vivant is performed by a bronzed bodybuilder; and a kitsch recreation of a LA’s Muscle Beach set in the 1970s is made with all the wrong materials.
The expectation that a tableaux vivant should have be centred on the living model is also confounded.
With the emotive tension of a slasher movie the audience can see only part of a human body lying on the other side of the structure, and must circumnavigate the lentil blockade to approach nervously a prone figure on the gallery floor.

Jean-Luc Godard's 1982 film about filmmaking, art, life, and love is an often stunningly beautiful work about a Polish film director (Jerzy Radziwilowicz) re-creating in tableaux vivant some masterpieces by Goya, Rembrandt, El Greco, and others.
While Radziwilowicz's director is criticized by his film's backers for lacking a story, a number of actual stories take place among the characters working on the film--yet Godard keeps them all at enough of a distance that they can't take over his deconstructed narrative.
This is a semi-autobiographical film about a Polish director making some tableaux vivants of clssical works of art, some of which are amazinngly beautiful.

Much of the imagery is classical — cut-outs of Greek statues, medieval motifs, drawings from old medical texts — but Jordan can’t resist bringing these seemingly noble images to scintillating life.
Every still life (and there are many) becomes a screaming tableaux vivant through the filmmaker’s zany juxtapositions, sudden zooms back and forth, and literal deconstruction of his objects, which break into pieces at random and float charmingly through the scene.
The medieval obsession with creating life is also the subject of much of the film’s whimsical attention.
