Tabloid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tabloid is a newspaper format particularly popular in the United Kingdom.
A third major format for newspapers is the Berliner, which is sized between the tabloid and the broadsheet.
Tabloid newspapers in Britain, collectively called the tabloid press, tend to be simply and sensationally written, and to give more prominence than broadsheets to celebrities, sports, crime stories and even hoaxes; they also more readily take a political position (either left- or right-wing) on news stories, ridiculing politicians, demanding resignations and predicting election results.

In its traditional sense tabloids tend to sensational stories and are reportedly prone to their news if they feel that the cannot or will not sue for libel.

Poynter Online - The March of the Tabloids
In the case of newspapers, we have had to wait a long time and climb a steep mountain to get to this exciting moment in which more newspapers are looking at smaller formats as an option.
It is not surprising that the birth of tabloids, around 1830, was accompanied by two characteristics that are, ironically, the same that motivate publishers and editors to convert to smaller formats today: 1.
It is this myth of the tabloid or, better yet, the irrational fear of some editors and publishers of the word "tabloid" itself that keeps many from contemplating the idea of testing their newspaper in a smaller format.

Certain opinion might have it that tabloid newspapers are not `true' newspapers, being as they eschew both the traditional form and content associated with broadsheets.
This may be the case, but they continue to be text-based, albeit with a very high visual basis and a deep structure remains in one form or another.
Tabloids run items across two pages more often, to make their page-as-unit the same or similar size to that of the broadsheet but, the amount of information included differs.

John Lloyd of the Financial Times argues that the tabloid newspapers stock-in-trade of outrage and indignation won out in the British General Election campaign.
Coupled with the ill-concealed disdain of the wealthy broadcast interviewers for the politicians and the media encouragement to members of the public to express OUTRAGE whether in a TV studio or a verbal ambush of a politician in front of the television cameras, there was little chance of an intelligent exploration of serious issues.
John Lloyd says that the tabloids are waning, which is part of the decline of newspaper culture.
