Tabuaeran is an atoll—one of the Line Islands of the central Pacific Ocean—located at Latitude 3° 51' 36" North – Longitude 159° 21' 52" West.
Tabuaeran has a population of 1,500, principally Gilbertese settlers brought from Kiribati by Fanning Island Plantations, Ltd, to work in the copra industry (copra is the meat of the coconut).
At some 900 miles distant, Tabuaeran is one of the closest landfalls to the Hawaiian Islands, and the atoll was possibly used as a stopover by the Polynesians who first settled Hawai'i.

Visited by the American explorer Edmund Fanning in 1798, it was annexed by Great Britain in 1889 and became a part of the colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1916.

 A Brief History
Tabuaeran Island is situated at N 3˚23' and W 159˚ 20', 160 miles northwest of Christmas Island.
It is a relatively large ring-type atoll, 11 miles long and 7 miles wide, with a total land area of 7900 acres divided into three main islands by channels, the deepest of which has a least depth of 16 feet.
In 1846, William Greig, a Scotsman, settled on Fanning Island (Tabuaeran) with a wife from Manihiki in the Cook Islands.

PHYSICAL FEATURES Tabuaeran is a low-lying atoll with a narrow fringing reef and three principal islets almost encircling a marine lagoon.

In Tabuaeran we have seen these and a few more, including one gray reef shark, three nurse sharks, a few large groupers, Napoleon wrasses, and a few bumphead parrotfishes.
As we pointed out in previous dispatches, Tabuaeran is an improvement from Kiritimati, although these are poor statistics compared to the 20 sharks per dive that Jim Maragos saw here in 1972.
Dead coral in Tabuaeran is covered by a pink crust of coralline algae and a small turf of red algae cropped as meticulously as the green in a golf course.

Although the three Northern Line islands of Kiritimati, Tabuaeran and Teraina are still worked regularly, the problems with unfavourable world prices and the high shipping expenses continue to threaten the industry.
Most other atolls have deep marine lagoons with many passages to the open sea, but on some islands, such as Tabuaeran (Fanning) in the Line Islands and Orona (Hull) and Nikumaroro (Gardner) in the Phoenix Islands, the lagoon is shallow and almost enclosed, with extensive intertidal mudflats and brackish marshes creating estuarine-like conditions.
The isolated stands of mangroves in the Gilbert Islands and the distinctive saline and brackish lagoons in the Line and Phoenix Islands are of conservation interest, as are the freshwater habitats of Teraina (Washington).

Born in Tarawa, the atoll-capital of the Kiribati Republic located almost 2,000 miles west of Tabuaeran atoll, Johny spent his childhood in a place where human population was about to explode.
The population of Tarawa depleted the reef resources and polluted the lagoon, and the inhabitants of Kiritimati and Tabuaeran are on their way to deplete their fishes too.
The second component of our field mission involved recovering a core from a living coral on Tabuaeran that can be used to calibrate the relationship between climate parameters and coral geochemistry.
