Many Telefolmin live in Tabubil, the township that grew up around the nearby Ok Tedi copper mine, and the wages earned by Telefol workers have become crucial to tbe well-being of people back in the villages, whose only food is often a meagre meal of rice provided by a son or brother at the mine.
Tabubil now relies on five daily airlifts of diesel fuel from Wewak (north coast) to run its backup generators.
Tabubil and Kiunga are still experiencing severe supply problems, pending repair to the wharf at Kiunga, which was washed out in earlier rains.

Tabubil is an interesting and fascinating place to live or visit.
When construction commenced on the overall infrastructure of the Ok Tedi mine in 1981 the township of Tabubil was born.

About a dozen Wopkaimin workers and their families lived for several years in Tabubil until 1981 when the OTML consortium was created to start the gold and copper mining project.
Tabubil, the operational and residential centre of the Ok Tedi project, is a highly stratified township with a few family houses provided for the wealthy, mostly expatriate, elite employees.
Initially when the Tabubil commissary was only open to higher paid workers residing in company houses, Wopkaimin men focused on beer as the only new prestige commodity available to them.

I confirm Mr Grace returned to Tabubil on or about 15 November 2000 for the sole reason of ensuring the Papua New Guinea operation was not placed in serious operational difficulty.
As there is no requirement for Mr Grace to proceed on a further tour to Tabubil, the staffing levels having been arranged, I advise that Mr Grace shall not be returning on any tours to Tabubil, Papua New Guinea, the next tour having been scheduled for Sunday 14 January 2001.

The two Mondays that I was there I ran with the local Hash House Harriers (in the pouring rain of course!) and had the customary down downs afterwards.
They have this distinct handshake in Tabubil that has apparently been used amongst the locals for some time.

I spent some time in Tabubil and was at the high school in 1987 - 1988.
Mr Marsh was the principle and taught maths and science, his wife Mrs Marsh taught english and Mrs Ward taught history and geography.

On the Ok Menga, a tributary south of Tabubil, a power plant was installed, that serves the mine and the town.

Tabubil and Kiunga are service towns for the Ok Tedi mine, the province’s major income earner, which is due to be shut down during the next few years.
They are both vibrant and safe little towns, but there isn’t much to see there: the mine doesn’t run visitor tours.

Red-breasted Pygmy-Parrot  Micropsitta bruijnii: Seen nicely at both at Tabubil and Ambua, the latter  birds being much duller ochraceous on the crown than the brighter yellow capped Tabubil ones, which may be an undescribed subspecies.
Lemon-bellied Flycatcher  Microeca flavigaster: The Tabubil birds are odd, being very short tailed and bright yellow beneath as compared to the savanna birds at Aroa.
Birds in the hills above Tabubil are odd, with pale yellow at the rear of the ear spots and obvious gape lines.

Of the 50 per cent paid to the landowners, 19.5 per cent will be held in trust by the Government through the Minerals Resources Development Company, 30 per cent will be paid out in cash as royalty and 0.5 per cent will be used for the fund's administration.
The planned signing of the agreement on Monday in Tabubil did not happen after the landowners refused to sign, accusing the Government of cheating on them.
However, they are arguing that the Lower Ok Tedi area is not part of Tabubil and should not be included in the trust.

When construction commenced in 1982, the mine site was uninhabited and the population in the Tabubil area was estimated to be around 700.
Approximately 2,000 landowners residing in six main villages in the Tabubil area are recognised as having traditional rights to the SML area, and therefore receive royalties, a share of dividends from the State’s equity in OTML [11], and various compensation and lease payments.
OTML has also been proactive in terms of developing approaches to sustainable development, for example, funding a forum at Tabubil in which interested parties from throughout PNG met to discuss sustainability issues relevant to the mining industry in Western Province and PNG in general.
