Its limits are: in the North with Zulia State, in the South with Apure State, in the East with Barinas State and with Merida State, and in the West with the Republic of Colombia.
The typical foods of the Tachira State are: The andean pizca, the andean chicha, the masato of rice, the pineapple guarapo, the calentao, the mead, the pineapple candy, candy of angel's hair, arequipe, taffy, allies, quesadillas, mantecadas.

Nelliver Lugo, policy director in the Táchira state government, said "this violence is the result of the large number of irregular groups affected by Plan Colombia," a U.S.-financed anti-drug trafficking and counterinsurgency strategy that is exerting pressure on the borders.
They stated that each such attempt would be responded to with the expropriation and redistribution of thousands and thousands of hectares of unproductive land.

The IPI report stated that "the aggressive rhetoric by President Chavez has contributed to the creation of a climate of intimidation and hostility toward the press and self-censorship is becoming more common." The IPI charged that some government officials at the state and city levels also have tried to intimidate the media.

On December 12, 2002, the State presented a report-response to the petition and the petitioners’ subsequent communications, in which it requested that the petition be declared inadmissible.
The State affirmed that a criminal proceeding exists, and that the petitioners have had the opportunity to present evidence and to object to decisions with which they are not in agreement.  Hence, the State argued that the criminal process has not yet been exhausted, which demonstrates the failure to exhaust domestic remedies.
In this case the Colombian State claimed the failure to fulfill Article 46.1 (c) of the Convention claiming that the matter alleged by the victims was being studied by the Special Rapporteur on the Question of Torture and the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions.

Gustavo Azócar Alcalá was arrested in the western state of Táchira minutes after finishing a daily show he hosts on the San Cristóbal-based TV station Televisora del Táchira, a station spokesperson told CPJ.
The state attorney general’s office said that the arrest warrant was issued based on Azócar’s failure to appear before a local court on charges of fraud filed in 2000.
Táchira state attorney general Ana Casanova filed the complaint against Azócar when she was working as a legal adviser to the lottery, El Universal reported.

In Tachira the most frequent crime is extortion, which is almost never denounced publicly, allowing the paramilitaries to act with impunity.
On June 17, thousands of campesinos (peasants) from six states arrived in Guasdualito, in Apure state, for a march against Plan Colombia and “against the paramilitaries who are aiming to destabilise the Bolivarian revolution”, a spokesperson stated.
