Tachyon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tachyon is constrained to the space-like portion of the energy-momentum graph.
In quantum field theory, a tachyon is a quantum of a field—usually a scalar field—whose squared mass is negative.
Tachyons are among the fictitious or hypothetical particles frequently invoked in treknobabble, often as a deus ex machina used to maintain the plot.

Tachyon condensation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In physics, tachyon condensation is a process in which a tachyonic field—usually a scalar field—of a negative squared mass acquires a vacuum expectation value and reaches the minimum of the potential energy.
The appearance of tachyons is a potentially lethal problem for any theory: the notion of an imaginary mass is troubling, and many proposed tachyon models involve violating causality.
The character of closed string tachyons is more subtle, and the first steps towards our understanding of their fate have been made by Adams, Polchinski, and Silverstein in the case of twisted closed string tachyons.

 Tachyon
In the language of the theory of special relativity, a tachyon is a particle with space-like four-momentum.
If a tachyon were to exist and were allowed to interact with ordinary matter, causality could be violated: roughly, there would no longer be a way to tell the difference between the future and the past along the worldline of a given piece of ordinary matter.
In quantum field theory, a tachyon is a quantum of a field - usually a scalar field - whose squared mass is negative.

A tachyon (from the Greek ταχύς, meaning "swift") is a hypothetical particle that travels at superluminal velocity.
The first theoretical description of tachyons is attributed to physicist Arnold Sommerfeld; however, the concept has recurred in a variety of other contexts, such as string theory.

We match the mass and spectrum of fluctuations of this soliton to the D0-D2 conformal field theory.
This spectrum includes a tachyon: the endpoint of tachyon condensation represents the ``disappearance'' of the D0-brane, and all modes associated with it, as it dissolves in the D2-brane.
This construction thus sheds some light on issues related to tachyon condensation.

By turning on a constant B-field, one can handle behaviour of tachyon by using the so-called non-commutative tachyon and it enables us to construct a lower brane as a topologial defect on an unstable brane containing tachyonic modes.
The problem of the tachyonic potential was studied in a number of papers by using the background independent open string field theory originally proposed by Witten.
The importance of these problrms is related to the interpretation of all string solutions of the string field equations of motion in terms of string/brane configurations.

It seems as if part of your question is 'what is the energy comparison between an FTL particle (a tachyon) and a photon moving at the speed of light?'.
The answer from relativity is that the tachyon energy is multiplied by the square root of minus one.
In fact the very latest string field papers seem to assume the whole tachyon condensation thing as a given background and move on to further topics.

Zwiebach has also made important contributions to the subject of D-branes with exceptional symmetry and to the subject of tachyon condensation.
In 1999, Ashoke Sen and Zwiebach showed that open string field theory can be used to calculate the tachyon potential and to confirm the existence of a critical point at the expected depth.
The developments that followed led to vacuum string field theory, a new version of open string field theory based on the vacuum of the tachyon.

It is argued that the condensation of both open and closed string tachyons in the orientifold corresponds to the annihilation of branes and antibranes in the F-theory dual.
One likely end-point of tachyon condensation is thus expected to be the vacuum of Type-IIB superstring.
Some speculations are presented about the F-theory dual of the bosonic string and tachyon condensation thereof.

The tachyon field acts on any bare boundary state: the Neumann or the Dirichlet state, and generates the boundary state suggested by S.P. de Alwis, which leads to the correct ratio between D-brane tensions.
Using the formulation based on this evidence, we suggest that the coordinates in which there exist tachyons on an unstable D-brane be identified as the soliton coordinates in integrable systems.
We further see how these amplitudes are affected through the tachyon condensation by integrating the correlators over the tachyon momenta and taking the on-shell limit.

Tachyon research has been performed in our laboratory but it was impossible to publish.
When the tachyon flies at infinite velocity, thus at zero energy (E=0), it could be considered as pure momentum P=M. Tachyon could be considered as non-local, not well defined in space or time.
Moreover the tachyon cannot be detected as such: it is only through the recoil of bradyons that its presence can be inferred through the tachyoelectric effect.

We call the final state tachyon matter, but no one yet knows what it is. The result of this paper, I think, is solely due to the fact that string theory tachyon condensation has no endpoint, and thus the tachyon field cannot bounce back to the origin in order to relax the initial defect density.

The basic tachyon condensation picture was related to a Yang-Mills description of intersecting branes in [17, 18, 19], where it was shown that the tachyonic mode on the intersecting branes gives rise to a recombination of the branes.
Putting electric flux on the D-branes, we find a qualitative description of tachyon condensation where intersecting branes recombine, giving a region of empty space between the branes in which the electric flux is replaced by
Because we are working in the classical Yang-Mills picture, the fundamental string charge is not quantized and the confinement of these strings is not completely apparent; as the recombined D-branes move apart, we are left with a distribution of stretched strings filling the vacuum.

It has been conjectured that at the stationary point of the tachyon potential for the D-brane-anti-D-brane pair or for the non-BPS D-brane of superstring theories, the negative energy density cancels the brane tensions.
We study this conjecture using a Wess-Zumino-Witten-like open superstring field theory free of contact term divergences and recently shown to give 60% of the vacuum energy by condensation of the tachyon field alone.
While the action is non-polynomial, the multiscalar tachyon potential to any fixed level involves only a finite number of interactions.
