 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2003.09.18   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
In the realm of Tacitean studies there is, as it now stands, a virtual subsection of research in Tacitean rhetoric, with sententiae as a focal point of particular current interest.
The present study concludes what by now many have already recognized: that sententiae are more than simply an ornamental component of Tacitus' work; there is in fact a close nexus between sententiae, subject matter and the larger political and social milieu of the day.
The study does not however, address how Tacitus' rhetoric (and obviously here we specifically mean sententiae) and texts fit into the author's political, cultural and literary environment (though the author does locate the literary and [ancient] theoretical place of sententiae).

 Tacitean studies
Tacitean studies is one of the topics in focus at Global Oneness.
In contrast to the Historiae, the style leaves behind rules and convention in favor of a strangeness that is achieved by the use of unusual forms, of an archaic and solemn lexicon.
Tacitus was able to consult the official sources of the Roman state: the acta senatus (the minutes of the session of the Senate) and the acta diurna populi Romani (a collection of the acts of the government and news of the court and capital).

 Tacitean studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tacitus is remembered first and foremost on his place as Rome's greatest historian, the equal—if not the superior—of Thucydides, the ancient Greeks' foremost historian.
Tacitean studies, however, extend far beyond the field of history.
Robert Graves' 1934 I, Claudius, and the ensuing Claudius the God (1935) filled the gap perfectly: all the missing parts of the Annals, up to the latter part of the reign of Claudius himself, were covered by a coherent story.

 Tacitus and Jesus. Christ Myth Refuted. Did Jesus Exist? A Christian Response
The passage is in perfect Tacitean style; it appears in every known copy of the Annals (although there are very few copies of it, and none dates earlier than the 11th century), and the anti-Christian tone is so strong that it is extremely unlikely that a Christian could have written it.
He was consistent in discerning rumor from fact--as I noted from a Tacitean scholar, he did this with the sort of scruples rare in an ancient historian.
Chances are we won't find any historian or Tacitean scholar who will say that Tacitus "probably investigated" the historicity of any single cite-area, because they think that readers are smart enough to know that a general proclivity to do such investigation covers the whole ball of wax.

Tacitean studies) is tricky business, with a lot of ifs and buts – make sure to follow recommendations if persuing this option:
The "main" article should have a summary style type of section summarizing the "reception history", and properly linking to the subsidiary article (for the Tacitean studies example this is the "Studies and reception history" section in the Tacitus article);
This can only be done if a split of the main article is unavoidable due to article size, and if splitting off the reception history is seen as the most appropriate way to perform that split (so: subject to consensus of wikipedians, preferably discussed on the "main" article's talk page prior to the split);

Among the contributors Judith Ginsburg and Elizabeth Keitel are known for previous work on the historian, the editors for major studies of Livy and Velleius, Mark Morford for studies of Roman Stoicism and Lipsius, while Bowersock needs no introduction either as Roman historian or pupil of Syme.
The unifying focus of the conference, as the editors note in their ample introdution, was to reflect on the development of Tacitean scholarship since Syme's Tacitus redirected so much attention to the man and his work in 1958.
I think the reader will readily concede the utility of the approach, which confirms his continuing appeal to readers across the boundaries of time, place and culture; what he will sorely miss, however, are the reflections and reactions of Sir Ronald Syme himself, a lack which cannot but diminish the collection.

 Francesca Santoro L'hoir: Tragedy, Rhetoric, and the Historiography of Tacitus' Annales, University of Michigan Press
With the passage of 2000 years, however, Tacitus' verbal stratagems remain largely undetected, because he wove them into his vast narrative tapestry so adroitly that they are discernible only subliminally.
Tacitean scholars have thus far danced piecemeal around the question of poetic influences on Tacitus and the significance of such influences.
Through a close reading of the text, the author looks at how Tacitus references the themes and language of tragedy and what the implications are for his historiography.
