Topic: Tactical bomber

Bomber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tactical bombers are smaller aircraft that operate at shorter range, typically along with troops on the ground.
The development of large strategic bombers stagnated in the later part of the Cold War because of spiraling costs and the advent of the intercontinental ballistic missile, which was felt to have equal deterrent value while being much more difficult to intercept.
Perhaps the one meaningful distinction at present is the question of range: a bomber is generally a long-range aircraft capable of striking targets deep within enemy territory, whereas fighter bombers and attack aircraft are limited to 'theater' missions in and around the immediate area of battlefield combat.

Fighter aircraft - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs.
They then found themselves being converted to an ever-growing list of secondary roles, including strike fighters, bomber destroyers and night fighters, where their two engines gave them the increased payload needed to fill these roles.
Later advances in targeting systems and the ever-increasing payloads meant that modern fighters can carry a load as large as the biggest WWII bombers, eliminating many of the bomber and ground attack aircraft roles as well.

 Aerospaceweb.org | Aircraft Museum - F-111 Aardvark
Ordered in 1960, the F-111 was originally a joint program to develop a deep-strike fighter bomber for the Air Force and a long-range interceptor for the Navy.
While the Air Force ultimately received several variants of its bomber, the Navy's F-111B was eventually cancelled because it was too heavy for carrier use.
Although there are rumors that the Air Force secretly developed and fielded a stealth tactical bomber similar in appearance to the Northrop YF-23 as a replacement for the F-111, it is more likely that the F-15E Eagle has assumed its duties.

See the April 1996 issue of WINGS magazine for an excellent summary of strategic bomber development from WWII to the B-1 Lancer and B-2 Stealth aircraft serving in the present Air Combat Command.
The B-57B was a modification of the British Electric Canberra bomber design, one of the very rare occasions when the US military appropriated a foreign design.
Originally planned as a nuclear-capable night bomber when built in the early 1950's, B-57s were the first combat jet aircraft to be based in Indochina following the escalation of US involvement after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
