Tadcaster is an ancient parish, comprising the townships of East Tadcaster, West Tadcaster, Oxton, and Stutton-with-Hazlewood, the aggregate area of which is 5,274 acres, and the population at the last census was 2,921.
On the Ainsty side of the river lie the townships of East Tadcaster and Oxton; the remainder of the parish is in the wapentake and parliamentary division of Barkston Ash.
Tadcaster Poor Law Union was formed in 1862, and comprises an area of 70,152 acres, with a population of 23,955.

Tadcaster is a market town in northern England, United Kingdom, lying on the Great North Road approximately 15 miles east of Leeds and 10 miles west of York.
Tadcaster was founded by the Romans, who named it Calcaria from the Latin word for lime, reflecting the importance of the area's limestone geology as a natural resource for quarrying, an industry which continues into the present day and has contributed to many important buildings including York Minster.
Tadcaster is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as the place were King Harold assembled his army and fleet prior to entry into York and subsequently on to the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

Sir Thomas retreated to Selby, during the night; and the Earl of Newcastle took possession of Tadcaster, where the royalists remained, till near the commencement of the siege of York.
