TADD DAMERON'S MUSIC, WITH LOVE - New York Times
Jones and his hand-picked musicians are convinced that Tadd Dameron's music is as alive and as exciting today as it was in the late 1940's, when the finest young musicians in jazz were flocking to hear the Tadd Dameron band at the Royal Roost, the modern jazz emporium on Broadway.
Dameron was a key figure in modern jazz, or be-bop as it is often called, but his roots were in earlier jazz, especially in the big swing bands of the 1930's and early 1940's.
Dameron began writing arrangements for Harlan Leonard and his Rockets, an orchestra that was not well known compared to most of the Kansas City bands but was respected by musicians.

Tadd Dameron : Fontainebleau - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Pianist-composer-arranger Tadd Dameron led relatively few sessions in his career, making the half-hour of music on this CD reissue quite valuable.
Dameron performs five of his originals (best-known are the complex "Fontainebleau" and "The Scene Is Clean") with an octet comprised of trumpeter Kenny Dorham, trombonist Henry Coker, altoist Sahib Shihab, tenor saxophonist Joe Alexander, baritonist Cecil Payne, bassist John Simmons, drummer Shadow Wilson and the leader's sparse piano.
As is usual with most Dameron dates, the emphasis is on his inventive arrangements although there is space (most notably on the 11-minute blues "Bula-Beige") for individual solos.

Tadd Dameron has been called "The definitive arranger/composer of the bop era." He spent the swing era writing charts for the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and others and appearing sporadically as a pianist.
As a pianist, Dameron is percussive and rhythmic, rather than particularly expressive, but as noted his playing did not stake his claim to history.
