In 1985 the Tadrart Acacus mountains were included on the “World Heritage List” by UNESCO, thus conferring upon them special status, affecting both possible ways of using and managing them, and their conservation and protection.
The Tadrart Acacus and the Messak Settafet are punctuated by thousands of carved images, created using different techniques and on various themes, whose date is the subject of a vigorous dispute.
On the one hand is the widely accredited hypothesis that these representations were created by the first Early Holocene communities of hunter-gatherers, dated to around 10,000 years ago, in other words a ‘long’ chronology.

Although I have worked extensively in Libya, I have never been to the far southwest to see the wonderful rock art there, the rock paintings of the Tadrart Acacus mountains and the rock engravings of the Messak Settafet plateau, which were to be the highlights of the tour.

 Libya: Cultural Sites
Unfortunately, the prehistoric site of Tadrart Acacus, a continuation of Tassili n'Ajjer in Algeria, is deteriorating because of tourists or specialist photographers who wet the cave paintings to make the drawings stand out better, or because of vandalism.
With the prospect of opening up the country to cultural tourism to encourage sustainable development and to make its cultural sites better known, a concentrated and concerted effort by the various national bodies responsible for this heritage is needed to make it possible to appeal effectively for expertise and resources from the international community.
The Sabratha Theatre, the Forum of Severus at Leptis, the Sanctuary of Zeus at Cyrene, and the houses and covered streets of Ghadames, as well as the cave paintings of Tadrart Acacus, should be preserved for future generations as an outstanding example of Mediterranean culture.

 Acacus - Italyan-Libyan Archaeological Mission in the Acacus and Messak
After more than fifty years of researches devoted to the past of the area the activities of the Mission deals with the study of the people currently living in the area of the Acacus Mts.
A key concern of the project is to pinpoint major traits of Kel Tadrart herdsmen - a contemporary Tuareg pastoral community of the Tadrart Acacus - in order to provide a coherent model which will serve as a source of comparison for archaeological research on past herder societies.
Fieldwork has already established a preliminary quantification of Kel Tadrart presence in the area, which adds up to less then ten families, each one composed by five individuals on average.
