The Tajik SSR was the name given to Tajikistan when it was part of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1991.
Established on October 14 1924, initially it was called Tajik ASSR ("A"-for Autonomous) and was a part of Uzbek SSR.
On December 5 1929 it was transformed into Tajik SSR and became a separate republic of the USSR.

This flag was adopted by the Uzbek SSR on August 29, 1952.
The blue represents the sky, the white represents cotton, the red represents the "revolutionary struggle of the working masses", the hammer and sickle represents the peasants' and workers' union, and the red star is the symbol of the proletariat.
Prior to this, the flag was red with the country's name in both Uzbek (Ўзбекистон ССР (Uzbekiston SSR)) and Cyrillic characters (Узбекская ССР (Uzbekskaja SSR)) in gold in the top-left corner.

The Roshanis live in the Pamirs in the Roshani District of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of the Tadzhik SSR, north of the Shughni domain.

As part of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan was initially grouped with what is now Uzbekistan in the Autonomous SSR of Tajikistan, but was later made a separate constituent republic.
Moscow did not do much to develop the Tadzhik SSR, and it remained relatively behind other Soviet Republics in living conditions, education and industry.

On the Tenth Congress of Soviets of the R.S.F.S.R. was adopted resolution calling for a creation of a federal union, and commission of representatives of the R.S.F.S.R., Ukrainian S.S.R., Belorussian S.S.R. and Transcaucasian S.F.S.R. prepared a declaration of union and treaty of union.
Finally two republics were so formed and admitted to the USSR in May 1925: the Uzbek S.S.R., in the eastern part, and the Turkmen S.S.R. in the western.
In 1929 the portion of the UzbekS.S.R. Inhabited by tadzhiks was split off and admitted to USSR as the Tadzhik S.S.R. Politic of Stalin in the late 1920s and early 1930 sparked a rebellion in Turkmenistan, and in 1927 the Soviets lost control of the Republic to national resistance movement called the Turkmen Freedom.

Linguistic relations have become strained in the past few decades because there is a covert, but at the same time systematic, attempt to oust the Tadzhik language from Samarkand, Bukhara and other places in Uzbekistan where the Tadzhiks form the majority.
The Tadzhik people have come under pressure as they are forced to give up their national identity and Tadzhik-language schools are being closed.
