Four generals of Taebong, Hong Yu(홍유, 洪儒), Bae Hyon-Gyong(배현경, 裵玄慶), Shin Sung-Gyon(신숭겸, 申崇謙) and Bok Ji-Gyom(복지겸, 卜智謙) overthrew Taebong and established Wang Gun(왕건, 王建) as the King in 918 and Goryeo Dynasty began.
Gung Ye was known as a bastard son of King Heonan or of King Gyeongmun.
Taebong at its peak consisted of territory in the present-day provinces Hwanghaebuk- and -nam-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, P'yÅngan-namdo and Chungcheongbuk-do.
Four generals of Taebong, Hong Yu(홍유, 洪儒), Bae Hyon-Gyong(배현경, 裵玄慶), Shin Sung-Gyon(신숭겸, 申崇謙) and Bok Ji-Gyom(복지겸, 卜智謙) overthrew Taebong and established Wang Gun(왕건, 王建) as the King in 918 and Goryeo Dynasty began.
In 927, northern Daegu was the site of the Battle of Gong Mountain between the forces of Taebong under Wang Geon and those of Hubaekje under Gyeon Hwon.
In this battle, the forces of Taebong were crushed and Wang Geon himself was saved only by the heroism of his general Sin Sunggyeom.
Among these are "Ansim," which literally means "peace of mind," said to be the first place where Wang Geon dared to stop after escaping the battle, and "Banwol," or half-moon, where he is said to have stopped and admired the moon before returning to Taebong.
Taebong at its peak stretched from the present-day North and South_Hwanghae provinces in what is now North Korea, to Gyeonggi, Gangwon, South P'yŏngan and North_Chungcheong provinces in what is today South Korea.
As a result, in 918 four of his own generals - Hong Yu(홍유, 洪儒), Bae Hyeon-gyeong(배현경, 裵玄慶), Sin_Sung-gyeom(신숭겸, 申崇謙) and Bok Ji-gyeom(복지겸, 卜智謙) - overthrew Taebong and installed Wanggeon(왕건, 王建;) as king.

This taesil (a box keeping the caul and the placenta) was discovered in a hillock called Taebong which was beside gasuwon Bridge on Gapchun.
Excavated in August 1991, when Taebong was going to disappear due to the widening of the state road between Daejeon and Nonsan, it is exhibited in the Local History Archive of Daejeon Metropolitan City.
It also seems to have made for a geomantic purpose of 'responding to the earth's energy' which means connecting the owner of the placenta and the earth's energy.
Two new kingdoms were established: Hugoguryeo (íê³ êµ¬ë ¤, Post- Goguryeo, later renamed Taebong (íë´)) by Gung Ye, and Hubaekje (íë°±ì , later Baekje) by Gyeonhwon.
This period is known as the Later Three Kingdoms era.
Wanggeon (ì•ê±´), who was a lord of Songak (present-day Kaesong), joined Taebong but overthrew Gung Ye and established Goryeo in 918.
As an adult, Shin became embroiled in the conflicts surrounding the fall of Unified Silla and rose to become a general of the short-lived kingdom of Taebong.
Probably realizing that Taebong was too weak to survive alone, he allied himself with other military men under the leadership of Wang Geon.
In 918, Shin Sunggyeom participated in a coup in which Wang Geon deposed the corrupt King Gungye of the Later-Goguryeo kingdom and established the Goryeo dynasty.
Wang Geon followed his father into service under Gung Ye, the future leader of Taebong, and he began his service under Gungye's command.
Its king, Gung Ye, whose leadership helped foundation of the kingdom but began to refer himself as the Buddha, began to persecute people who expressed their opposition against his religious arguments.

As the unification of Three Kingdoms was achieved by Shilla, the main province was annexed to Shilla territory and remained so for 8 years.
Goryo which unified post three kingdoms(Shilla, Taebong and Hubaekje) divided the nation into 10 provinces in September, the 14th year of king Seong-Jong and this province was called Haeyangdo and it was changed into Jeollado by joining with Gangnamdo and placed its capital in Jeonju.
In 1896, Korea with five provinces such as Jeolla, Gyong Sang, Chungcheong, Ham Gyong and Pyeongan was divided into two areas : Nam-do and Buk-do, abolishing four administrative districts of the province and Jeollado was semi-divided into two provinces, Nam-do and Bukdo, thus creating Jeollanamdo with the provincial office placed in Gwangju-gun.

Many have either used the Maitreya incarnation claim to form a new Buddhist sect or have used the name of Maitreya to form a new religious movement or cult.
* Gung Ye, a Korean warlord and king of short-lived state of Taebong during the 10th century, claimed himself as living incarnation of Maitreya and ordered his subjects to worship him.
His claim was widely rejected by most Buddhist monks and later he was dethroned and killed by his own servants.

Wanggeon, who was the general of Taebong, re- unified the three countries again, using his power, excellent leadership and wonderful personality, and named it 145;Goryeo; in order to succeed the idea of 145;Goguryeo;, and the capital was set up in Gaegyeong (currently Gaeseong).
Wanggeon was the follower of Gungye who was the founder of Taebong.
In fact, Wanggeon intended to establish his own country rather than be placed under the order of Gungye.
Balhae, established in 698 claimed it as successor of Goguryeo in her diplomatic negotiations with Japan.
Taebong, initially called Hu-Goguryeo ("Later Goguryeo"), claimed her succession of Goguryeo and so did Goryeo, which was even named after Goguryeo.
Remains of castles, palaces and several artifacts have been found in NorthKorea, including ancient paintings in a Complex_of_Goguryeo_TombsGoguryeo tomb complex.
