Taegukgi (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (known simply as Brotherhood in Europe, or 태극기 in Korea or 太極旗 in Chinese) is a 2004 film directed by Kang Je-gyu dealing with the Korean War, a bloody civil war where brothers turn into enemies.
The film's title, "Taegukgi", is the name of the prewar Flag of Korea as well as the postwar Flag of South Korea.
The movie then depicts Jin-tae's death as he bravely mans a machine-gun post to hold off the North Koreans, killing many in the process and allowing Jin-seok to escape, but is inevitably overwhelmed and killed himself, his body curled up, riddled with bullets.

Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo - Movie Review (Taegukgi, Brotherhood, Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War)
Near the beginning of 'Taegukgi', a soldier gravely wounded by a landmine goes mad in the army hospital, shooting the other patients around him before turning the gun on himself.
The red, blue and fl designs of the 'Taegukgi' represent male, female and earth respectively, and it is with earth that the film begins and ends - but not earth as a place of fertility and sustenance for a nation, but rather as a mass grave.
The most expensive South Korean film to date, 'Taegukgi' is set on an epic scale, with years of meticulous research ensuring that the political background is accurate, and with the vast sets and cast of over 25,000 extras bringing a brutal reality to the battle sequences.

Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (2004) - A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
"Taegukgi" is the story of two brothers who are unwillingly drafted into the South Korean army following the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950.
All are placed in coffins and covered with a South Korean flag (which is called Taegukgi.) In the aftermath of war, there really is no difference between the combatants -- all their differences ended at their deaths.
Taegukgi follows two South Korean brothers conscripted to fight after the North Koreans invaded the South in 1950.

Korean Movie Review | Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (2004) Je-gyu Kang, Dong-kun Jang, Bin Won
"Taegukgi" is without a doubt a nationalistic movie (the film's Korean title translates into something along the lines of "wave the Korean flag"), the kind of big-budget spectacle you'd find on the resume of one Michael Bay.
Without a doubt, "Taegukgi" is a visually impressive film, but that doesn't negate the fact that you've seen it all before.
The movie is over two hours and 30 minutes long, with a massive second act and an equally arduous concluding act.

The movie follows the ebb and flow of the Korean War and successfully captures the intensity and ferocity of battle while, much like its WWII cousin, still paying homage to the veterans of each conflict.
Taegukgi, in addition to being the most expensive Korean movie ever made (at about $12.8 million), also solidified the status of actors Jang Dong Gun and Won Bin, who played the brothers, as major motion picture stars.

Taegukgi is the name of the south korean flag for those of you keeping score at home.
Not only is this an incredible movie, but it also sends a message in response to (what many say is) the major generation gap in Korea between the older and younger generations, and how each regards the legacy of the Korean war, as well as the aftermath that is the current situation in Korea today.
The last bit of the movie, where Jin-seok kneeled in front of his brother (from what i feel, reverted back to his 18 year old self)and told him that he had waited for his return for 50 years, was when the whole theatre lost it.

TAEGUKGI is often compared with Steven Spielberg's SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - film whose realistic portrayal of military conflict looked like shocking novelty to the audiences accustomed to PG-13 wars of Clinton's age.
TAEGUKGI is impressive film, but it is far from being classic.
TAEGUKGI, nevertheless, deserves praise as a film that deals with the past in an old-fashioned but effective way that would help audience comprehend certain unpleasant elements of the present.

TaeGukGi is the highest grossing movie in Korea.
It is a brutal account of the Korean War as seen through the eyes of two brothers, and their relationship and reactions to the violence as the war progresses.
TaeGukGi really slows down when this happens, and also takes about forty-five minutes to get into its groove.

CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Taegukgi Review - A bond of brothers
But this is a movie about Koreans and their divided, traumatized country, couched not so subtly as metaphor in the story of two brothers.
The movie opens in modern times, with the excavation of a mass burial near the 38th parallel, and the ID of a G.I.'s remains.
But what really separates Tae Guk Gi from Private Ryan's ilk is that the conflicted Koreans fight desperately in their own backyard, as opposed to U.S. movie soldiers who are always on an adventure abroad.

Newly released war movies have never seemed to sit well with me since Saving Private Ryan because the themes, emotion and action always seem rather bland nowadays, hardly the sensitivity a director wants his viewers going into his war film feeling.
Given mainly two characters, their family back home and a couple supporting army characters, Taegukgi doesn’t particularly care about creating an assortment of minor army buddies to tragically lose their lives slowly depleting the brotherhood that forms in their company.
Je-gyu takes several safe bets like the soldier proudly passing around pictures of his loving family that he wishes to return to, or the recurring conversation and argument provoked by Jin-seok, self-conscious about his perceived child-hood and the responsibility he has to his older-brother.
