Korean War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The invasion of South Korea (Republic of Korea, ROK) came as a surprise to the United States and the other western powers; in the preceding week Dean Acheson of the State Department had told Congress on June 20 that no war was likely, although a CIA report from early March had predicted a June invasion.
The goal of saving South Korea had been achieved, but because of the success and the prospect of uniting all of Korea under the government of Syngman Rhee the Americans, with UN approval, were convinced to continue into North Korea.
In South Korea, the painting was deemed anti-American, a longtime taboo in the South, and thus was prohibited for public display until the 1990s.

 South Korea's nuclear surprise | thebulletin.org
Fourth, South Korea's hidden actions exemplify the impulse toward proliferation that arises in response to the discriminatory treatment the United States shows to different states, permitting, for example, Japan to have tons of plutonium while South Korea may have none, and Japan to explore mixed oxide fuels for reactors while South Korea may not.
The news that South Korea admitted in August 2004 that it had enriched uranium and not declared it was trumped in September by the revelation that it had also extracted plutonium in 1982, and had declared neither activity to the IAEA.
In fact, South Korean nuclear researchers, especially those affiliated with the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), like their colleagues in Japan, were eager to reprocess plutonium from spent fuel to "close the fuel cycle" on "energy security" grounds, to reduce South Korea's high dependence on imported fossil fuels, and, increasingly, on uranium fuel.
