The Taff Trail is a popular walking and cycle path that runs for 54 miles between Cardiff Bay and Brecon in Wales.
The trail was launched in September 1988 by Sir Wyn Roberts, Minister of State for the Welsh Office.
Taff Ely borough council had created cycling routes within its boundaries, Cardiff city council had provided the Three Castles Cycle Route from Caerphilly into Cardiff, and the Brecon Beacons National Park was developing leisure trails to encourage the use of the park.

The Trail was opened in 1992 as the culmination of a project led by Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff, in partnership with over thirty other organisations.

The detailed guide to the Trail is now out of print and is unlikely to be reprinted in the near future, but the Trail can be followed using the leaflet in conjunction with OS maps and signing and interpretation boards on the ground.

Probably the most popular is the Taff Trail, which is a surfaced track, with some roads, suitable for cyclists as well as walkers.
The Taff Trail footpaths are in two parts, to the north and south of Merthyr Tydfil.
North of Merthyr the Taff Trail consists of a 36 mile (58km) circular walk between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon.

The Taff Trail is a multi-purpose route between the Cardiff waterfront at Cardiff Bay in the South and the Market Town of Brecon in the North.
A large proportion of the Taff Trail is designated "Traffic Free" which has been achieved by using the routes of former tramways, railways and canal towpaths including the original rights-of-way, embankments, cuttings and viaducts.
The Taff Trail is used by walkers and cyclists for trips of varying length throughout the year.

The Taff trail is a long distance route, starting in Cardiff Bay and ending in the market town of Brecon; being built for cyclists as well as hikers the trail is flat and easy going most of the way, but at a distance of over 55 miles is still quite a challenge.
The Taff trail has its fair share of pubs, a couple are nicely placed by the canal side, ideal for a midday pint on a sunny day (assuming you're lucky enough to get a sunny day).

From Talybont, we continue on the Taff Trail through lanes for 8km as far as Brynich Lock on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
The trail then turns on to the towpath for the last 3km stretch back to the heart of Brecon town.
To check the state of trails, a good person to ask is Keith Lee at Bikes and Hikes in Brecon (see Food and Where to Stay) who sits on the local trail committees.

Plans for a new community woodland at Merthyr in south Wales are aimed at putting people back in touch with nature – and opening up the heritage of the area to everyone.
Works include planting new trees, managing present woodlands, building new paths and improving parts of the area – including the historic Trevithick Tramway along which the first ever steam train was run – to enable people of all abilities to use the site.
The project is the second to be given the go-ahead under the second phase of Cydcoed, a £16 million Forestry Commission in Wales Objective One programme jointly funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.

The multi use trail alongside the River Taff in Whitchurch is perfect for all weather exercise and an ideal path for commuting bikers.
The Taff Trail was busy that day as there was a Cancer Research sponsored ride, as well as lots of people out enjoying a ride on a summer Sunday.

The Taf Trail is one of the most recent long distance footpaths in Wales.
The Taf Trail Circuit in the Brecon Beacons National Park begins and ends at Cefn Coed having walking to Brecon by one mountain pass route around the Central Massif and return via a mountain pass on the other side.
The walking approach this design is intended to encourage is to move away from seeing a long distance footpath as a purely head down physical challenge and to encourage an approach based less on counting mileage and more on exploration and understanding.

Clarence Road Bridge was originally a pivoting bridge allowing tall-masted boats to pass up the river Taff as far as the Town Quay.
The present bridge was opened in 1976 and is where the walk joins the Taff Trail.

The new half-mile link through the M4 Coryton interchange between Whitchurch and the Taff Trail at Tongwynlais is complete.
Re-surfacing of the Taff Trail south of Coryton has enhanced the route for all types of users.
As part of the future Ystwyth Trail development, a 2.5-mile section of route including an upgraded bridlepath between Llanfarian and Llanilar has been opened along with a new section of route further south from Dolfor towards Tynygraig along the former railway.

 The Taff Trail Guestbook
This seems more like a bulletin board than a guest book, so here goes: I'm a Canadian bike touring the trail in early October and I'd like someone to post letting me know if there are many stealth (wild) camping opportunities near or by the trail.
I had no map (couldn't find one with taf trail marked on it anywhere!) I found the existing signs small and infrequent enough to send me off down numerous false paths between Tongwynlais, Radyr and Taffs Well before eventually finding the correct route.
Every now and again the police have a purge on motorbikes on the Taff Trail, yes do complaint to Merthyr Police, but make sure you ask for an incident number, this ensures that your complaint is logged, and when it's logged more notice has to be taken, and hopefully more action taken against these pests.
