It is celebrated for its large and luscious dates, to the successful cultivation of which, soon after the arrival of an ancestor (Al Hassan Addakhil) of the reigning dynasty of Morocco (the Alaouite Dynasty) around 1250, this dynasty owes its rise to power.
The name Tafilalt is a Berber name meaning "the Country of the Hilali", as its inhabitants are called, because they were descended from the Arabian tribe of Banu Hilal, who settled here.

The Tafilalt, Morocco - Chasing the Lizard’s Tail -
The Tafilalt is the exception that proves the rule, for this oasis, along with the isolated M'zab region of the Algerian Sahara, played host in the eighth and ninth centuries to the Kharijite heresy.
Situated at the southern edge of the Tafilalt, some eighty kilometres from Er-Rachidia, the town was built by the French in the 1920s to coordinate their attempts to subdue this particularly troublesome region.
Situated (at that time) at the head of the Tafilalt, it soon acquired a position of great importance on the trans-Saharan caravan routes, for it was the southernmost outpost of the Maghreb el-Aqsa, a place through which all merchants and traders from the Sudan had to pass.

Since 1648 it has been the custom of Moorish sultans to despatch superfluous sons and daughters to Tafilalt, and as the males are all sharifs, the fanaticism against Europeans is comprehensible.
It was destroyed at the end of the ith century, but its ruins still extend five miles along the river bank.
The first European to visit Tafilalt was Rene Caillie (1828), the next Gerhard Rohlfs (1864).

The communities of the Southeast were officially tied to the rabbinic centers in Meknes, but in the Tafilalt the Abuhatzira family of Erfoud (formerly of Rissani) had an active yeshiva which trained youngsters from all over the region.
It appears that there was a process of centralization during the last two generations (i.e., during the period of the Protectorate), in which the regional centers declined in importance in relation to the established rabbinic authorities of Marrakesh.

Outside the Tafilalt, the Haratine are referred to as drawa, natives of the Dra’a Valley, an oasis to the west of the Ziz Valley, or `azzi (plural `awazza Bambara) in reference to the Bambara people of Sub-Saharan Africa.
With Tafilalt plunged in political and tribal strife during the first three decades of the twentieth century, the caliphate of the Sultan, Moulay Mehdi, tired of being abused and tired of anarchy desperately pleaded with “the dog,” meaning the French colonial power (al-isti`mar), to step in and restore order and dignity to Tafilalt.
The occupation of Tafilalt was seen as the first act in a series of a theatrical drama that would open the door to the ferocious areas of Jbel Saghro and the High Atlas.

During the French rule over the region of Tafilalt, Morocco, the only way to travel from one city to another was by caravan.
A few decrepit trucks loaded down with cargo and passengers would clang their way through the searing desert wasteland until an engine would overheat, bringing the caravan to a grinding halt, until the geyser of hissing water and steam emanating from the radiator would subside somewhat.
Tafilalt's caravan would depart once a week, every Tuesday, and it's route was such that it would always arrive at a certain remote village on Saturday.
