  Tafseer Comparison
It is the aim of this website to present a comparison of the various Tafseer work of some prominent Muslim exegetes with respect to some Qur'anic verses that have been the subject of divisions and discussions among Muslims.
Third: If a tradition is mentioned in the Tafseer work, that tradition should not be used as a source to explain a Qur'anic verse but the Qur'an should be used to verify the authenticity of that tradition.
On the other hand, a tradition could be used to explain the circumstances of revelation of a particular verse provided the understanding is not rejected by the context of the verse or verses.

An Introduction to the Science of Tafseer
Technically, the science of tafseer is a branch of knowledge in which the meanings of the Quran are explained and its injunctions and wisdoms are described openly and clearly.
Therefore, their statements too have great importance in the science of tafseer, although there exists a difference among scholars whether or not the statements of the tabi'in are decisive in tafseer (al-ltqan, 2/179) but their importance is something which cannot be denied.
Tafseer ibn Kathir: Hafiz 'Imad al-din Abu al-Fida' Isma'il ibn Kathir al-Dimashqi al-Shafi'i (died 774 Hijrah), a distinguished research scholar of the eighth century, is the author of this commentary.

Ummah.com - Frequently Asked Questions about Tafseer
The difference between tafseer and ta'weel is that tafseer is the explanation of what is intended by the wording and ta'weel is the explanation of what is intended by the meaning.
Tafseer was given for each ayah of the Qur'an or part of an ayah, arranging these verses according to the order in the mushaf.
Or like the tafseer of Tantawi Jawhari where he mentioned that there are modern sciences and disciplines in the Qur'an and he filled his tafseer with pictures of birds and animals to demonstrate that the Qur'an did explain such things.

Thus, the Prophet's explanations of Qur'aanic passages are refereed to as the Tafseer of the Qur'aan by the Sunnah.
Tafseer of the companions is extremely important since they accompanied and learned from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam).
After the Qur'aan, the Sunnah and the Tafseer of the Sahabah, the Tafseer of the successors is considered as a valid source.

Tafseer of the Holy Qur'aan - MuslimAccess
When a person is going to write a tafseer of the Quran, they have to be extremely careful about what they write because theses are the words of Allah, which are being expounded on and clarified.
There were some other ways they included in their tafseers, such as certain stories from the People of the Book which were backed up in the Quran and Sunnah, or they would sometimes use personal ijtehad (this was very limited) little to none.
One of the major signs of a translation or tafseer that has not followed the methodology of the sahabah is that it will have mistakes in the area of Aqeedah.

The sources that the Companions used for tafseer were the Qur'aan, the statements of the Prophet (SAW), the principles of Arabic grammar and rhetoric, their own personal reasoning {ijtihaad), and pagan and Judaeo-Christian customs that were prevalent at the time of the revelation of the Qur'aan.
This tafseer, although heavily based on narrations, also discusses the grammatical analysis of the verse, the various qiraaat and their significance on the meaning of the verse, and, on occasion, Ibn Jareer's personal reasoning (ijtihaad) on various aspects of the verse.
Greater emphasis was also placed on personal reasoning (ijtihaad), and tafseers written solely for the defence of sectarian views (such as the tafseers of the Mu'tazilah), and even for the defence of one's fiqh madh-hab (such as the tafseers of the Hanafees, Shaafi'ees and Maalikees) appeared.

 Tafseer of the Holy Qur'aan
The first thing to know is that the Prophet, peace be upon him, has explained the meaning of the Qur'aan to his companions, just as he taught its words.
The point I am stressing is that the successors learned the exegesis (tafseer) of the Qur'aan from the companions as they learned the hadeeth of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) from them.
This is not at all to deny that they exercised their minds on different verses and expressed their opinions, as they did with regard to various ahaadeeth of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam).

masjiduthaymeen.org » Reading from the books of tafseer while in the state of impurity
Question: I read some of the books of tafseer like the book Safwat ut-Tafseer while I am in the state of ritual impurity… like my monthly period for example.
Answer: There is no harm upon the menstruating and bleeding woman to read the books of tafseer nor is there any harm in reading the Qur’aan with the exclusion of touching the actual book in accordance to the most correct statement of the Scholars.
As for the one who is in a state of impurity then there is no reading of the Qur’aan absolutely until a full ritual bath (ghusl) has been taken and they are then able to read the books of tafseer and hadeeth and other than these two without reading what is in the Qur’aan.

Thus, the Prophets explanations of the Al-Quraanic passages are referred to as the Tafseer of the Al-Quraan by the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).
Whenever the Sahaabah could not find the Tafseer of a passage in the Al-Quraan itself or in Sunnah, they would use their own reasoning based on their knowledge of the contexts of the verses and the intricacies of the Arabic language in which Al-Quraan was revealed.
However, the Tafseer transmitted from the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the Sahaabah did not cover all of the verses of Al-Quraan.

If you ask what is the best method of tafseer, the answer is that the best way is to explain the Qur’aan through the Qur’aan.
Ibn Mas`ood (radiyallaahu `anhumaa) died, most probably, in 33 A.H. Ibn `Abbaas (radiyallaahu `anhumaa) lived for thirty six years after him, and added a lot to the treasury of Islaamic knowledge.
This is the reason why most of what Ismaa`eel ibn `Abd al-Rahmaan Suddee has written in tafseer consists of the explanations of these two scholars: Ibn Mas`ood and Ibn `Abbaas (radiyallaahu `anhum).
