Folksonomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tagging is folksonomy but folksonomy is not tagging !
Folksonomic categories may strike those of a formal turn of mind as hopelessly idiosyncratic, but therein lies their value: a folksonomic category arises from an individual's engagement with the tagged content, such that the created category is simultaneously personal, social, and (to some degree) systematic, albeit in an imperfect and provisional way.
However, it is difficult to see how the large and varied community of Web page authors could be persuaded to add metadata to their pages in a consistent, reliable way; Web authors who wish to do so experience high entry costs because metadata systems are time-consuming to learn and use.

A List Apart: Articles: Much Ado About Smart Tags
Smart tags are very much like the first stages of the web in that anyone can publish metadata, so long as they learn the technical side, and they need to advertise in search engines, etc. to get people aware of their metadata.
Smart tags can automatically contact an unknown server and download a binary file to a standard location on the user’s hard drive with no user intervention or, according to what Microsoft has said so far, any sort of check to ensure that the file is benign.
While smart tags might allow an author to link his response from a critical page, there would be no way to ensure that readers of the page saw the response unless the owner of the critical page embedded the smart tag in that page.

Meta tag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meta tags are HTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page.
Meta refresh tags can be used to instruct a web browser to automatically refresh a web page after a given time interval.
Meta tags such as these have been the focus of a field of marketing research known as search engine optimization (SEO).

APEv2 tag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The APEv2 tag format is a modification of the APE tag format that is used by default for the WavPack (WV), Musepack (MPC) and Monkey's Audio file format as a metadata container for such information as the title, artist, album, track number or other information about the file to be added to the file itself.
The first version "APEv1" or just "APE tag" was originally developed for the Musepack (MPC) file format and is an integral part of the Musepack specification.
Developers mainly endorse APEv2 because the ID3v2 tag is very rule based and very difficult to update.

All 2-letter tags are interpreted according to ISO standard 639, "Code for the representation of names of languages" [ISO 639].
Language META Tag and ISO 639 2 letter and 3 letter language codes can be found at the W3C - www.w3.org - ISO 639 Language Codes.
The value of the Content attribute of the META element is the same as the value of the Content-Language header in HTTP; i.e, a comma-separated list of language codes.

META element provides metadata such as a document's keywords, description, and author.

Shirky and others have argued that folksonomies that use tags - "user-created metadata" - are the only cost-effective way to generate order in large dynamic systems such as the net.
But users can add tags to their posts on top of their categories, and he suggests that people might start to change the way they categorise blog posts to take advantage of Technorati Tags.
Tags also collate newsworthy images - the "tsunami" tag hosts a powerful collection of pictures taken by ordinary individuals.

Tagging, tag clouds, and auto-tagging @ Stephan Spencer’s Scatterings
Tagging that requires manual intervention such as del.icio.us and Technorati definitely have their use, but I think they are primarily for more web-intensive users; the combination of manual control and auto-tagging offered by Eurekster with swickis can potentially lead to mass uptake amongst web content editors.

 HTML META Tags
Using an HTTP header is preferable to using META tags, since the header will be understood by cache agents and proxies in addition to browsers, and metadata (such as PICS data) may be associated with image files, sound files, etc.
Tags using this form should have an equivalent effect when specified as an HTTP header, and in some servers may be translated to actual HTTP headers automatically or by a pre-processing tool.
META tags should be placed in the head of the HTML document, between the and tags (especially important in documents using FRAMES).

The currently most widespread standard tag formats are the ID3 ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags, and the more recent APEv2 tag.

Despite all the current hype about tags – in the blogging world, especially – for the authors of this paper, tags are just one kind of metadata and are not a replacement for formal classification systems such as Dublin Core, MODS, etc. [n15].
There is a range from a 'selfish' tagging discipline, where the users are primarily tagging their own content for their own retrieval purposes, right through to a more 'altruistic' tagging discipline, where the user is tagging others' content for yet others to retrieve.

 Practical: An ID3 Parser
ID3 tags are used to embed metadata in MP3 audio files.
Since ID3 tags are typically stored at the beginning of a file, to rewrite an ID3 tag without disturbing the rest of the file you must replace the old tag with a new tag of exactly the same length.
Dealing with ID3 tags will be a good test of the binary data library because the ID3 format is a true real-world format--a mix of engineering trade-offs and idiosyncratic design choices that does, whatever else might be said about it, get the job done.
