This is a sketch grammar of Tagbanwa, an Austronesian language spoken in the northwest of the island of Palawan in the western Philippines.
Tagbanwa phonology is interesting in having received a far greater number of Spanish loans (italicized above) than Tagalog: the result has been a separate "phonology within the phonology" for this part of the lexis.
Furthermore, mother-tongue Tagbanwa speakers have become very proficient in languages of wider communicative reach and power such as English, Tagalog, and Cuyunon, and they have been teaching these to their children for decades-leading to substantial language and culture shifts.

The Tagbanwa alphabet is one of a number of closely related scripts used in the Philippines until the 17th Century AD.
It is thought to have descended from the Kawi script of Java, Bali and Sumatra, which in turn descended from the Pallava script, one of the southern Indian scripts derived from Brahmi.
Tagbanwa is a syllabic alphabet in which each consonant has an inherent vowel /a/.

Now the few remaining Tagbanwa (under 1,000 in number) are of mixed parentage and highly bilingual, dominant in the local trade language Cuyunon (a Bisayan language with some 123,000 speakers) and Tagalog (the Philippine national language with 17 million).

Following the example of the Tagbanwa, other indigenous communities within the Philippines are now looking at titles of ancestral domain over land and water as a tool to secure their permanent rights to land and marine resources.

This is the home of the Tagbanwa, an unreached tribal group.
The reason this small island is targeted for evangelism is that it is made up of 95% Tagbanwa.
There are other Tagbanwa on surrounding islands so it is centrally located for evangelism.

For those familiar with the Philippines, the granting of a CADC to the Tagbanwa of Coron does probably not appear to be an extraordinary achievement since CADCs have been granted elsewhere before and after that.
When the DENR finally contacted the Tagbanwa communities on the planned declaration of the island as protected area, the Tagbanwa made their position very clear: they agreed to co-operate in the conservation of the island, but only if it is recognised as their ancestral domain.
Although decision making power is now largely devolved to the Tagbanwa communities, conservation agencies and the DENR, by assuming that role, still have the possibility to pursue their interests and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources on Coron.

I hadn't looked for Calamian (or however you spell it!)under 'tagbanwa' before (duh)...
I didn't realise that it was so close to tagbanwa, obviously I still have a lot to learn about my new family!!
I love learning new ways of representing language so it is very interesting to note that there is still a traditional script in use for Tagbanwa which should be able to be used for the Calamian dialect too.
