Surigao del Sur is a province of the Philippines located in the Caraga region in Mindanao.
It is bounded on the Northwest by the Province of Surigao del Norte, on the Southeast by Davao Oriental, on its Eastern side by the Pacific Ocean, and on the West and Southwest by the Provinces of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur.
The Province of Surigao del Sur was created as the 56th Philippine province on June 19, 1960 by virtue of RA 2786 and was formally organized or separated from its mother province, Surigao del Norte, on September 18, 1960.

It is bounded on the northwest by Surigao del Norte, on the southeast by Davao Oriental, on the east by the Pacific Ocean and on the west and southwest by the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte.
Sur was created as the 56th Philippine province on June 29, 1960 by virtue of R. No. 2786 and was formally separated from its mother province, Surigao del Norte, on September 18, 1960.
Surigao became the eastern District, comprising Agusan and all the islands between the towns of Butuan and Caraga in 1869.

 Old Surigao
In 1609, Juan de la Vega who was sent by the Spanish government to Surigao to subdue the hostile natives after Legaspi's final conquest of the Philippines, established a symbol of authority by erecting a stone fort and built a small settlement about the size of the football field enclosed by a stone wall.
Surigao was then called Caraga, a district which covered the present province of Agusan, the two Surigao and a part of Davao.
As center of faith and capital town of Surigao or Caraga, Tandag was fortified with cottas which were erected sometime by the 18th century within the northern side of the town and near the old cemetary at its west.

Surigao del Sur, in the Caraga Region of the Republic of the Philippines, was created by the division of the Province of Surigao in 1960.
The land slopes from the Diwata Range in the west down to a deeply indented coast, and then further down to the Mindanao Deep.
The remainder is largely forest, and industry is largely limited to logging and wood-processing, including paper-making, although Surigao del Sur reportedly sits on enormous reserves of iron ore.

Fifty-nine suspected Communist guerrillas and eight soldiers were killed in separate gunbattles Thursday on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines, military spokesmen said today.
The army command said that 44 guerrillas of the New People's Army and 2 soldiers were killed and that 10 soldiers were wounded in two clashes near an isolated mountain town, 30 miles west of Pagadian in Zamboanga del Sur Province, 300 miles south of Manila.
In another encounter, about 150 guerrillas reportedly opened fire on an army patrol on the outskirts of Tagbina in Surigao del Sur Province, 550 miles southeast of Manila.

In Agusan del Sur, police authorities suspect that two candidates for barangay captains are supported by the New People's Army (NPA) and these are now under surveillance by military and police intelligence in the area.
As per the Comelec list, five of the nineteen municipalities in Surigao del Sur have been placed under 'tight watch' by authorities due to rising tension brought about by the synchronized elections on July 15.
The synchronized poll first incident of killing in Caraga Region happened in the twon of Tagbina whena candidate for barangay captain was shot dead by a driver of a municipal councilor who was believed to have been supporting the political rival of the victim.

Earlier, five vehicles and 10 motorcycles led by Lakas-CMD mayoralty and vice-mayoralty candidates together with their police, Army and CAFGU escorts were flagged down by some 25 heavily armed NPA rebels who disarmed the security escorts in Bugdangan and Kauswagan, both of Loreto town, Agusan del Sur.
Last week, NPA rebels also disarmed a police escort during a rally of a mayoralty candidate in Tagbina town, Surigao del Sur.
The reports stated that policemen, Army soldiers and CAFGUs assigned to secure the candidates were unable to make a move when surrounded at gunpoint by the rebels.
