Sur was created as the 56th Philippine province on June 29, 1960 by virtue of R. No. 2786 and was formally separated from its mother province, Surigao del Norte, on September 18, 1960.
Surigao became the eastern District, comprising Agusan and all the islands between the towns of Butuan and Caraga in 1869.

TAGO, Surigao del Sur -- The recent elections, from where I sat, could only be viewed as a money contest, a price war.
In Surigao del Sur we call election money as tili-tili or rain shower, but that would have to change because on May 11 it proved to be much more than just a trickle.
This could be an indication that running a campaign in Surigao del Sur spells financial bloodbath, thus slowly easing out political gladiators from an arena whose rules are defined solely by the color of money.

Surigao del Sur, in the Caraga Region of the Republic of the Philippines, was created by the division of the Province of Surigao in 1960.
The land slopes from the Diwata Range in the west down to a deeply indented coast, and then further down to the Mindanao Deep.
The remainder is largely forest, and industry is largely limited to logging and wood-processing, including paper-making, although Surigao del Sur reportedly sits on enormous reserves of iron ore.
