THE Portuguese government has decided to build a 7km rail link across the River Tagus to connect Chelas in Lisbon on the north bank to Barreiro on the south side.
The new rail link will not only provide a much-needed second rail crossing of the Tagus for commuters living on the south side who work in Lisbon, but it will also connect the Lisbon--Oporto main line with the main line to the Algarve.
At present passengers travelling by rail from Lisbon and northern Portugal have to cross the Tagus by ferry to connect with rail services to southern Portugal.
