Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands.
Archæological evidence indicates that Tahuata was inhabited by Polynesians as early as 200 CE.
In later pre-European times, the tribes of Tahuata were allied with the tribes from the Nuku province of Hiva Oa, and the island was considered a dependency of that province.

Tahuata was visited by hundreds of trading ships and whalers during the following decades.
To reach "our" island (Tahuata) we fly 750 miles (aboard a new 60-seat Airbus) to Hiva Oa (largest island in the southern Marquesas) and drive by jeep to board a large sportfishing boat.
This "ferry" crosses the 3 mile channel to Tahuata, bringing you to Vaitahu.

Some boats were making Tahuata their first landfall before going over to check-in with the Gendarmes (police) in Atuona (on Hiva Oa).
Because of our decision, we either need to be near a dive shop, or near friends that are willing to share their dive compressor.
We were able to dive in Tahuata ONLY because Emerald was generous enough to share the dives with us and fill our tanks.

The island of Tahuata is located at 9º56'S and 139º06'W. It is separated from Hiva Oa by a 3-kilometer wide sound known as the Bordelais Channel.

The islands were given their name by lvaro de Mendaa de Neira who reached them in 1595, visiting first Fatu Hiva and then Tahuata before continuing on to the Solomon Islands.
The American navigator Capt. Joseph Ingraham first visited the northern Marquesas in 1791, giving them the name Washington Islands.

During the night, the canoe made a course of Hema (South) and was set 32 miles WNW of Tahuata by the ESE tradewinds and the west-flowing current.
We picked up the tow from escort boat Kamahele at 6 am and were towed for 8 1/2 hours, into Vaitahu, anchoring at about 2:30 pm yesterday.

Ua Pou is the place most people think about when they think about French Polynesia...it has the notched ridges to the hills and the huge spires jutting into the sky...pretty spectacular scenery.
As we were leaving Tahuata at 0400 a huge squall descended over the 1000 foot face at the rear of the anchorage and chased us out of the bay...the rains behind us were torrential but we just had showers...talk about timing.
The bay we were leaving (Hana Tefau) is renowned for the swirling winds and williwaws but we liked it the best of any place we'd been so far...crystal water, good snorkeling and we had it to ourselves for two days...
