The Taichu POW Camp was constructed in the summer of 1942, following the surrender of the British forces in Singapore and the American forces in the Philippines.
The main work to which the POWs were assigned at Taichu Camp was the excavation of a huge diversion channel in the river which ran adjacent to the camp.
The site of the Taichu POW Camp was located in late October 1998, when Michael and Tina Hurst made a trip to the countryside south of Taichung City in search of the camp.

A note on geographic names: in 1947, little over a year after the Japanese empire had withdrawn from the island, the names of Taiwan's cities -- and indeed that of Taiwan itself -- sometimes differed from what we are used to today.
Thus Taipei was referred to in the earlier articles as Taihoku (the Japanese pronounciation of the characters) or Taipeh, while Taichung was known as Taichu, Kaohsiung as Kaoshun.
With few exceptions Taiwan was known by its seventeenth-century Portuguese name Formosa, and the Taiwanese as Formosans.
