What Your Horse's Tail Tells You
Overall tail movement is governed by portions of the semitendinosus muscles, which extend over the horse's rump and attach to the vertebrae.
For instance, at the point where the tail attaches to the buttocks, the skin is five-eighths of an inch thick--as much as a half-inch thicker than it is anywhere else on the horse.
The importance of the tail as a locomotor device was greatly diminished.

Tail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tail is the section at the rear end of an animal's body, the term particularly referring to such a section which forms a distinct, flexible appendage to the torso.
Tails are mostly a feature of vertebrates, however some invertebrates have tail-like appendages, such as the tail of the scorpion, or the furcula of the springtail.
In most birds, tails consist of feathers of extended length, the function of which is to act as a rudder to balance and steer the bird in flight.

Tails are generally thinner than the nose, as too much volume or "corkiness" placed aft will fight the tri-fin setup, which relies on constant turning leverage to provide speed.
Tail rockers are straighter and flatter than typical longboard shapes for more drive and speed (and reducing high speed max-outs), the narrower, thinner tail compensates for lost tail kick.
They were known as "split tails," "twin pins" and, after the establishment of this design, "Fish tails." "Twin pins" is an apt name, as this board is effectively a deep-biting pintail when put on a rail while providing the planing speed of a wider squaretail when driving horizontally.

Besides helping to contain the con- tents of the pelvic cavity the levator ani muscle moves the tail cranially and laterally, presses the tail against the anus and the external genitalia, compresses the rectum and causes the sharp angulation between the 6th arid 7th coccygeal vertebrae which is characteristic for defecation.
Tail muscles are also important in stabilising the vertebral column and sup- porting the action of the extensor muscles of the back as well as those of the croup and buttocks.
Removal of the tail in the mature dog may lead to atrophy and degeneration of these muscles, in addition, if these muscles lose their distal attachments there may be a lessening of the support and anchorage of the rectum and anus.

The length of a specimen is measured from the first trunk ring to the tip of the tail, or the combined trunk and tail lengths.
Tail rings are counted from the ring just below the anal fin to the ring before the tip of the tail.
On the female seahorse, the lower abdomen joins the tail at a sharp angle and her anal fin is often higher and slightly larger.

When comets come near the Sun, their tails become visible because heat from the Sun vaporizes some of the icy nucleus or head and sunlight reflects from the vapor.
When the Great Comet of 1843 was nearest the Sun, its tail was perhaps as long as 475 million kilometers (300 million miles), or extending beyond the orbit of Mars.
From the study of spectrograms, it is known that comets are made largely of compounds of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen.

If I were to copy a tail 100% the way they're made in nature, at the very least, the fur would be 5-7" long, and the loft of the would would have to be 5-6 inches at the widest portion of the tail.

 Wolf Anatomy and Behaviour
Tail position may play a part in scent communication: a dominant animal raises its tail to facilitate scenting by the other animal, and a submissive animal will lower its tail to mask its scent.
Dominant animals usually lift a leg and stand with tail raised during urination (dominant males will cock a leg high; dominant females still squat, but often with one foot off the ground), and follow urination with a succession of raking movements of the hind legs and general aggressive behaviour.
The tail is held between the legs or to one side and wagging weakly; the eyes are narrowed and the head turned away, the lips retracted in a submissive grin, or "fear-grimace".

Dinosaur Tails - Enchanted Learning Software
The tails of some dinosaurs could be useful in attaining a tripod stance, which was probably used to forage very tall vegetation and for mating.
Ankylosaurids (like Euoplocephalus and Ankylosaurus) had bony nodules at the end of their tails that could easily have been used for defense, which would have been useful for these lumbering, plated grazers.
This theory seems unlikely given the amount of physiological damage to tail tissue that would be caused by the sudden acceleration near the end of the tail (and the deceleration upon impact).

"The Anatomy of a Loop" | Lambda the Ultimate
As was popularised by Steele, a tail call is essentially a "goto that passes arguments." So writing loops with tail calls is just writing them with gotos.
Tail calls may be similar to goto from an implementation standpoint, but they're no different from a function call in terms of the language itself.
Given that, the fact that some solutions involving direct tail calls are less simple than they might be is irrelevant: just use the appropriate control construct for the job in a given case.

Because the caudal parts of the body and the tail move from side to side to a greater extent than do the anterior regions, and the tail has a particularly broad, flat surface, the mass of water moved and its acceleration are accordingly greater.
The lift generated by the tail produces a turning moment about the fish’s center of gravity that tends to push the head down, but this is balanced by an opposite turning moment generated by the planing effect of the large pectoral fins placed low on the body.
Because the moment arm of tail lift to the center of gravity is longer than that for pectoral fin lift, the lift from the tail must be smaller than that from the pectoral fins and head.
