The tailpiece, found on many musical instruments of the string instrument family, anchors the tail end of the strings, the end opposite the scroll or headstock.
Tailpieces of the violin family of instruments, as well as acoustic basses, are suspended with a "tailgut" looped around the end pin or end button.
Tailpieces may be seen in various shapes, resembling a tulip, a goblet, or the Hill style, which has a central longitudinal ridge, giving it a faceted appearance.

The American Nyckelharpa Association | How to replace the nyckelharpa's tail piece
If the tailpiece were to receive a blow upwards and the angle were close to 90 degrees, it might lift up from the body of the harpa.
There must be good contact between the tailpiece heel and the edge of the top, and between the tailpiece heel and the matching notch in the body of the harpa, for the sake of resonance.
Moving the tailpiece side-to-side will change this, and although you might not think it's such a big deal, it only takes small changes to make the distance between the strings and the tangents (the action) noticeably different.

The tailpiece is elaborately carved and easily recognizable, as is the loop of chord (gut) that connects it to the endpin in the tail of the body.
The soundholes are an unusual squiggle shape that might be a reflection of the stonecarver's fancy, or might be an elaborate instrument (the carving on the tailpiece, and the knob accent on the pegbox hint at the latter).
Tailpiece: The tailpiece construction consists of a peg thrust through the end of the sound box, to which was attached a cord (gut or similar material) that held a small block of wood to which the strings were anchored.

Tailpiece   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The tailpiece is the area where the strings attach to the instrument below the bridge or at the base of the instrument (as opposed to the headstock).
Although tailpiece designs and tailpiece covers vary widely in design and appearance, all serve the purpose of attaching the strings to one end of the instrument so they can be placed under tension.
The tailpiece typically has a hole through which an endpin is inserted, making the attachment of a mandolin strap possible.

What does happen is that our tailpieces being solid and much more rigid than a flimsy piece of tin will transfer the vibration of the string to the instrument with more efficiency.
It is a little hard to see in the photo but the tailpiece is centered on the corner of the vice so that the corner of the vice engages as far as possible to the underneath side of the face.
The top is free to move independently of the tailpiece and is not dampened by the stamped tailpiece that was applying down pressure on the top.

The red damping strip on the underside of the tailpiece is too far back to be effective on my instrument, but the slot allowed a mounting which cleared the coverplate.
Since the tailpiece is shorter, there will be more of a drop in the string height from bridge to tailpiece, especially as the strings exit from beneath.
Although the tailpiece was designed with the resophonic in mind it will do nicely on an other instruments as well, where a ball end string is to be used.

The Session: Discussions - Banjo question
The tailpiece has some effect on how the banjo sounds (I rate the tailpiece itself as number five on my list of factors that effect the sound, in descending order of course) but the angle of the strings as they come off the bridge towards the tailpiece is more important (number four on the list.)
Some tailpieces (mine included) have a bolt on the back that you tighten to push the tailpiece closer to the head or loosen to ease the tailpiece up off the head.
You don't have to loosen the strings to move the tailpiece, the changes in tension are not that much.

Bass Player - The Endpin & Tailpiece: More Tone Factors
His luthier installed a very long tailpiece made of rosewood, which is heavy; this caused the wolf tone to “float away into the air somewhere,” as he described it.
A tailpiece that’s longer is, of course, heavier—but it also results in less distance between the tailpiece and the bridge.
Innovative instrument designer Ned Steinberger feels that the distance between the bridge and tailpiece is significant because the tailpiece vibrates with the bridge—and this movement is directly affected by the placement of the tailpiece mass.

Changing the pegs, tailpiece, and chin rest?
I have looking to buy some new violins recently and noticed not all of them have fl (my guess is ebony) tailpieces, pegs, and chin rests.
I`m currently looking at a 1900 German model with inlaid tailpiece and pegs (of ebony) - I don`t know if I like that either, but the violin itself has a beautiful tone.
Another violin I saw didn`t have an ebony tailpiece, chinrest, and pegs, but it was a darker type than the rosewood/boxwood.
