A tailsitter is a type of VTOL aircraft that launches and lands on its tail, something akin to a Buck Rogers type rocket, such as the McDonnell Douglas DC-X Delta Clipper.
The downfall of the tailsitter configuration was the lack of an ability to transition the pilot to a comfortable position from which to control his descent.
This inability led to the concept being abandoned as soon as the experiments that led to the development of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier in the 1960s began to bear fruit.

The Convair XFY-1 Pogo, developed in 1954, was a "tailsitter" aircraft with two large contra-rotating propellers.
Some of these have been individual craft where a person stands atop a spinning propeller or ducted fan that lifts them off the ground-something that required a lot of courage from the pilot.
Others have been aircraft that sit on their tails (so-called "tailsitters") and are lifted into the air before converting to horizontal flight.

This "tailsitter" aircraft had two large contra-rotating propellers on its nose.
Both were extremely difficult to control in vertical flight (the pilots had to look over their shoulders to see the ground when landing), and both were grounded in 1956.
The Ryan X-13 Vertijet tailsitter was more successful.

The Goldeneye is a "tailsitter" or "pogo" machine that takes off and lands straight up.
It is a stumpy-looking machine with four tailfins, each with landing gear on the fintip, and a wing that pivots, allowing it to be aligned with the aircraft centerline in cruise flight and at a right angle to the centerline in hover flight.
Details are unclear, but illustrations of the SkyTote show it to be another pogo-type tailsitter, with a surprising resemblance to the pogo fighters of the 1950s.

Once impressive piece is the resin 'chunk' that is actually the intake centerbody, and it has a detailed cockpit tub on the topside and an equally detailed nosewheel well on the bottom.
The sheer mass of this part is the nice bit of engineering in this kit, as this piece also serves as the ballast to keep this kit from becoming a dedicated tailsitter when completed.
The etched metal parts and white metal castings round out the kit, and they provide a nice level of detail, and in the case of the metal landing gear struts, additional strength to the model.

This aircraft poses a number of interesting problems and it can be done, but it has taken a long time for Austin to model things correctly before it flew without cheats.
A couple of other items are Lerche II and Convair 49 (built both), and there are some others in the US and French design books which are tailsitters.

Although a two-blade propeller was initially fitted to the first A6M1 prototype, it led to vibration problems, and was replaced by a three-blade variable-pitch Hamilton Standard propeller, built under license by Sumitomo.
The aircraft was a "tailsitter", with main landing gear hinged in the wings and retracting towards the fuselage, giving the Zero a comfortably wide stance.
The tailwheel retracted into a nock under the tail, and a "stinger" type arresting hook was fitted just forward of the tailwheel.

One word of caution when building, is that there is very little room under the floor for weight and you need to put in as much as possible as the Gazelle is a ready tailsitter.

At the end of the Cruise during the deceleration fuel is pumped forward to the wing transfer and even the forward trim tanks is necessary thus moving the CofG forward again as the centre of lift moves reward.
Once on the ground it is standard practice to then pump more fule into the forward trim tanks to correctly balance the aircraft, so it can be unloaded without any stability problems and the chance of it becoming a "tailsitter"
The Movement of fuel also provides additional benefits at lower speeds: By making the aircraft rearward heavy during take off and landing, this causes the elevons control surfaces to move downwards to counteract this weight and in so doing so increases the camber of the wing generating more lift at slower speeds.

Concerning the nose shape, I had to cut it along the horizontal plane, and by doing so opening a lid so to speak, and adjust it in such a way that when refitted again the nose would have a lower profile and less steep angle from the tip of the nose towards the windshield.
Also by opening the nose I could try to adjust the nosewheelbay (which didn’t work, so I just left it the way it was, it wasn’t that terrible afterall) and fill it up with lead weight, since this model would definitely be a tailsitter without some counter weight in the nose…..
Note the off-sized nose in the picture above with the balsa mould intended for the heatformed canopy lateron.

Sadly, I experienced slight to moderate silvering even with large applications of my favorite decal aid, Solvaset and pricking with the tip of an XACTO blade.
The model's weight and balance just didn't work out, and, although I wedged in a group of sheet lead in the nose, she's still a tailsitter.
Guess I could've packed some additional lead into the nose section of the wing tanks, but the overall model weight may have adversely affected the spindly gear struts.I simply drill a small hole in the nosegear tire, and glue in a short piece of.030" plastic rod.

I chose to close up both the nose and the engine compartment.
It will take a fair amount of weight to keep this model from being a tailsitter and there is no way to conceal all the lead shot I used for weight and keep the nose open.
The cockpit and nose compartment share a common "floor" the firewall, guns, stick, instrument panel, seat and seat frame (with a piece of armored glass) attach to this floor.

The instructions also mention you'll need 20 grams of weight to place in the nose of the model, otherwise you'll have a tailsitter.
Color information is given for Revell paints, though some RLM numbers are also provided.

(it truly is a work of art in itself) Since the kit is a tailsitter there's quite a bit of lead solder stuffed in the nose.
Because of this I didn't install the gun.

Don't go through a lot of effort on it as it is difficult to see through a rather distorted canopy.
You do need to pack the nose with lots of weight and I had to add a few weights behind the cockpit bulkhead as this baby is a real tailsitter.
The landing gear really needs replaced and Aeroclub does offer a replacement set, which I did not use.
