(1152-1185) was the son of Taira no Kiyomori, and one of the Taira Clan's chief commanders in the Genpei War at the end of the Heian period of Japanese history.
Tomomori was again victorious over the Minamoto in a naval battle at Mizushima two years later.
At the Battle of Dan-no-ura, when the Taira were decisively beaten by their rivals, Tomomori joined many of his fellow clan members in committing suicide.

 Battles of Ichinotani and Yashima
Taira no Shigehira is pursued along the shore by Kajiwara Kagesue of the Minamoto (at the top), and Taira no Tomomori urges his horse to swim so he can escape to a boat.
Kumagai Naozane beckons with his fan to Taira no Atsumori, challenging him to return to shore and fight (in the middle), and an overloaded boat has capsized, where the Minamoto warrior Chikatsune manages to seize Taira no Moromori, who is only 14 years old.
Nasu no Yoichi is chosen to accept the challenge and, despite the fading light and strong winds, hits the target and the fan shatters in mid-air.

The "Tokaiya", "Funayagura" and "Daimotsu no Ura" scenes are the second, third and fourth scenes of the second act of "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura".
Tomomori tells Suke-no-Tsubone that, if in fact he is not successful in his mission, all the lights on his boat will be extinguished.
Begging Yoshitsune to believe that it was not Tomomori himself, but his resentful ghost, that attempted to avenge itself on him, Tomomori ties himself to an anchor, and jumps into the sea.

The Taira busied themselves preparing a defense of the western provinces into 1184 while Minamoto Yoritomo eliminated Yoshinaka (who had now become more trouble to the Minamoto then he was worth).
In March 1184, however, the legendary Minamoto Yoshitsune captured Ichi-no-tani, and the war entered its final stages as the gate to the west was thrown open.
Tomomori hacked his way back to the Emperor's ship and informed Antoku and his mother that all was lost, the two leaping into the ocean to drown.
