The Five-Self theory and the Koshas
The Taittiriya Upanishad is exceptional in that it is one of the first writings to present a systemmatic metaphysic or theory of first principles.
The Taittiriya Upanishad presents a very world-affirming philosophy, because each level of self is described in a positive way, and Brahman itself is referred to emphatically as the nature of Bliss (Ananda).
In the teachings of Gaudapada and Shankara, the world-affirming element of the original Taittiriya Upanishad was denied, and the five selves (atma) become five koshas or "sheaths" which veil the light of the True transcendent self or Atman.

A developed emanationist metaphysical system is found in the Taittiriya Upanishad, which shows obvious traces of influence from the slightly earlier and less systemmatic Chandogya Upanishad.
There is however little or no similarity with the Egyptian, Chinese, and original Kabbalistic conceptions, all of which spoke in terms of many souls, rather than a single gradational continuum from material body to divine spirit.

Delight of Senses: The Indian Way of Seeing It (A Discourse on Indian Theory of Rasa in Relation to Visual Arts)
The term 'Rasa', to mean juice, particularly of the creeper Soma, appears in the Rig-veda itself.
It is, however, in various Upanishadas - Taittiriya, Kaushitaki, and Isha, that the term 'Rasa' has been used to denote variedly 'essence', 'flavor', or 'something that moved'.
The Taittiriya Upanishada perceived 'Rasa' as essence, something which is beyond senses; the Kaushitaki, as flavor of Brahman - a hymn or 'mantra'; and Isha, as something that appealed and moved the mind.

Ethics of the Upanishads by Sanderson Beck
The larger body of Vedic literature is divided into two parts with the four Rig, Sama, Yajur, and Atharva Samhitas and their Brahmanas making up the Karmakanda on the work of the sacrifices and the Aranyakas and the Upanishads the section on knowledge called the Jnanakanda.
The Aranyakas are called the forest texts, because ascetics retreated into the forest to study the spiritual doctrines with their students, leading to less emphasis on the sacrificial rites that were still performed in the towns.
The Taittiriya Aranyaka tells how when the Vataramsa sages were first approached by other sages they retreated, but when the sages came back with faith and tapas (ardor), they instructed them how to expiate the sin of abortion.
