Taiwanese (linguistics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taiwanese (Chinese: 台語, 台灣話 or 福佬話; Taiwanese Pe̍h-oē-jī: Tâi-oân-oē or Hō-ló-oē; Hanyu Pinyin: Táiyǔ or Táiwānhuà) is the primary spoken language of 70% of the Taiwanese population.
Taiwanese is similar to the speech of the southern part of Fujian because most Taiwanese have ancestors who migrated from there in the 17th to 19th centuries.
Taiwanese has extremely extensive tone sandhi (tone-changing) rules: in an utterance, only the last syllable pronounced is not affected by the rules.

The grammar of Taiwanese is similar to southern Chinese dialects and akin to Hakka and Cantonese.
In some situations, Taiwanese is written using a romanized orthography with the Latin alphabet (Pe̍h-oē-jī, "vernacular writing") developed first by Presbyterian missionaries and later by the indigenous Presbyterian Church in Taiwan; they have been active in promoting the language since the late 19th century.

The Hakka were called this when they began migrating into Yue-speaking territory, and the exotic name seems to have stuck quite simply because, until fairly recently, many Cantonese and Min mistakenly thought that the Hakka were not Chinese at all, but rather some kind of strange non-Han "barbarians" like the Tai or the Miao.
The names of origin areas of Hakka and Hoklo are almost identical.
The name of Hakka started to appear in literature only after 17th century, at the same time of conflict between Hakka and non-Hakka began.

Taiwanese-Americans believe that the current name of this office is inappropriate and should be changed.
The letter points out that using a city's name (Taipei) as the title of a national level office is not only misleading but also inappropriate because the name belittles the office's position as well as Taiwan's status.
Therefore, rectifying the representative office's name should not encounter any resistance but rather be welcomed by the U.S. The letter campaign was kicked off in late May. Since then, nearly 30 Taiwanese-American organizations have endorsed a statement of similar contents and enthusiastically joined the letter collection effort.
