Taiwanese photography is deeply rooted in the country's unique and rapidly changing history.
Its early photography is often divided into two periods: Pre-Japanese from approximately 1858 to 1895, and an Era of Japanese Influence, from 1895 to 1945, the year the Japanese occupation of Taiwan ended.
Modern Taiwanese photography is marked by the Nationalist government's takeover of Taiwan in 1945.

Taiwanese bridal salons offer a full-day (or multiday) dramatic temporary makeover in which stylists alter a bride’s eye shape (with makeup, tape, and razor blades) to appear more round, lighten her skin, and style, and restyle, her hair.
In this sense, the bride’s future self is one of the intended audiences for the pictures, as she can use the images in future conflicts with her husband and in-laws as evidence of the wear on her health and beauty from marriage and family.
Adrian identifies the process of bridal photography and the resulting pictures as a new wedding ritual, one that is more meaningful for young couples than the traditional rituals their parents and grandparents guide them through.
