Taiwania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is native to eastern Asia, growing in the mountains of central Taiwan, and locally in southwest China and adjoining Myanmar and northern Vietnam.
The populations in mainland Asia are treated as a distinct species Taiwania flousiana by some botanists, but the claimed differences between these and the Taiwanese population are not consistent when a number of specimens from each area are compared.
The genus is named after the island of Taiwan, from where it first became known to the botanical community in 1910.

Application of Ecosystem Management Decision Support System in selecting suitable site for Taiwania
Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides), distributed in mid-elevation areas, is one of the most important native coniferous species in Taiwan.
Using the topographic and soil data, suitable sites for Taiwania were selected according to the fuzzy logic provided by the EMDS knowledge base.
According to the results of previous researches, environmental factors related to Taiwania growth in different levels were selected to build the dependency network and data links.

Taiwania protected area, as a contribution to the on-going participatory development of a new nature reserve that would incorporate all known living
Initial species that would be propagated at the Centre would be Taiwania cryptomerioides, Xanthocyparis vietnamensis, Calocedrus rupestris, Glyptostrobus pensilis and Cupressus sp, with seedlings being planted out in nature reserves to supplement existing wild populations.
Using expertise from the Centre, satellite nurseries would later be established at two other locations to propagate Taiwania cryptomerioides and Glyptostrobus pensilis closer to their natural area of occurrence.

Poster 85: Effects of Soil Moisture Content and Mycorrhizal Inoculation on the Growth of Taiwania cryptomerioides ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Two months old seedlings of Taiwania inoculated either with Glomus mosseae or Acaulospora laevis or a mixture of both were cultivated in greenhouse for four months.
They were then transplanted to soils of different moisture content of 20%, 40%, or 60% and allowed to grow for additional 18 months.
These results suggested that, in mycorrhizal association, different fungi may function differently and that when using mycorrhizal inoculation to enhance the host plant tolerance/resistance to the water stressed environment of planting site, selection of proper inoculants is critical to the success of the planting programs.
