  3rd season of archaeological excavation gets underway in Iran's city of Takab
In the second season of the excavations, it was enlightened that under the reign of Ilkhanids, Takht-e Soleyman Complex, excluding the official section, was converted into a charitable township consisting of a bazaar, mosque, bathroom and a number of residential buildings around the northern gate.
The complex located to the northeast of the present city of Takab in West Azarbaijan province is one of the three major Zoroastrian fire temples.
Takab with a population of 85,000 is located to the south of West Azarbaijan province in northwestern Iran some 300 kms from the center of the province.

The Takab area, located in northwest Iran, is considered to be one of the most important gold mineralized zones in Iran.
In the Takab area these conditions are provided in the Precambrian fl shale and carbonates, and also in the fractured Oligo-Miocene calcareous shale, karsted limestone, ferruginous carbonate and marls, which host most of the known mineralization in the area.

The known Au, As, Sb and base metal mineralizations in the Takab area are mainly epithermal in origin and are hosted by jasperoid, fl shale, carbonates, and partially altered andesite.
The surface mapped Tertiary igneous rocks and the interpreted high magnetic-susceptability igneous rocks beneath the sediments are combined in a binary raster map to represent the heat sources driving the migration of mineralizing hydrothermal solutions in the area.

I found a small bike shop in Takab which had a kick stand that would work with my bike.
From Takab to Bijar was rolling country, with the road going up & down between 1850m & 2000m in altitude.
It was mostly very dry land with the flatter areas sown with wheat & the hilly slopes left for sheep pasture.

However, the studies by the Palaeolithic team of Iran's National Museum around the historical site of Takht-e Soleiman, 45 kilometers out of Takab in West Azarbaijan, led to the discovery of two open sites from the Mid Palaeolithic Age (100,000 to 40,000 years before).
The area is located over a mine of flint stone, and all the tools are made out of such stone.
"The discovery of Palaeolithic sites in the area [Takab] shows that the northern parts of Zagros Mountains had settlers only in inter Ice Age during the Palaeolithic time due to the cold weather and lack of caves and rocky shelters," explained Heidari.

I know Takab is closer, but it seems to be more difficult to go from Tabriz (or Orumiyeh) to Takab then from Tabriz to Zanjan, and the scenery along the road from Zanjan is supposed to be very impressive.
I got a taxi from Zanjan to Takht-e Soleiman for 7000 toman (about US$10 at the time) and it took about two hours.
On the return, I couldn't find a taxi to take me back to Zanjan, so I took a shared taxi to Takab, and another back to Zanjan, about three hours and 3000 toman altogether.
