 Takagi Yoshin Ryu
It is believed that it was a school for bodyguards.
The school was organised by Takagi Oriemon Shigenobu in the beginning of the 15th century.
As with most other koryu, the densho (scrolls) are arranged in a particular order, and each Waza (Technique), Kata (Forms), etc are supposed to be learnt in the same order, mastering one before going on to the next one.

Soke of the Chosui Ryu Ohkuni Kihei Kiyosumi (a son of either Ohkuni Onifujita or Ohkuni Onigenta guards of Go-Daigo) renamed it Kishin (kijin) Chosui Ryu.
The Kukishinden Ryu dakentaijutsu is a form of Yoroi Kumi Uchi a grappling in armor, and the Takagi Yoshin Ryu a form of jujutsu that is used indoors.
As the Kukishin Ryu was from the coastal area of Kumano, and members were involved in activities relating to the sea, it was a weapon that was permanently at hand, for the skilled warrior.

The Togakure ryu is a ninjutsu ryuha that some Bujinkan practitioners claim was founded at least 900 years ago by Daisuke Nishina (Togakure), who had learnt shugendo practices as well as hakuun ryu ninjutsu from Kagakure Doshi.

Takagi Yoshin Ryu means ‘High Tree, Raised Heart’ school and this is one of the nine schools inherited by Hatsumi Soke from his teacher Toshitsugu Takamatsu Sensei.
Takagi Yoshin Ryu works particularly well as a modern self-defence school as it presumes that the exponent is unarmed, in a confined space and probably facing multiple opponents.

 Bujinkan Dojo Adelaide/History
The second oldest of the nine traditions, this ryu forms much of the basis for the Ninjutsu techniques taught in the Bujinkan.
Not much is known of this ryu except that it is an Iga ninja school and concentrated more on the espionage side of ninjutsu, rather than the fighting side.
This ryu was originally founded by Uryu Hangan Gikanbo in the mid 1500 and specializes in koppojutsu or bone-breaking techniques.

Kumogakure Ryu was possibly developed in the 1600's by the Toda family as a school of thought.

 Traditions of The Bujinkan
Shinden Fudo Ryu, an iaijutsu, or method of sword drawing, bases its strategy on the natural use of the body to deliver dynamic techniques to pin opponents thus granting more time to utilize a sword or one of the school's oversized weapons including war axes, battle hammers, and naginata, or halberd.
Takagi Yoshin Ryu, known as a school of bodyguarding, concentrates on capturing or covering several points on an opponent's body and moving in as little space as possible to apply its techniques.
The Kumogakure Ryu focused part of their training upon weather prediction and the Gyokushin Ryu was very adept at using the nagenawa, or lasso.

Takagi Yoshin Ryu was at one time a "Bodyguard-school," consequently the Jujutsu without weapons is very important wether attacked by an opponent with or without a sword.
But in Takagi Yoshin Ryu the hand is often grabbed with the palm towards the chest, and the thumb put pressure on the back of the opponent's hand.
Another characteristic of Takagi Yoshin Ryu is; when the opponent is pinned down on the floor, the defender is standing up, while he is controlling the opponent with pressure on 2-3 Kyusho simultaneously.

In 1645, Takagi Oriemon Shigenobu was taught by Ito Suketada from the age of 16.
In October 1841, the 13th generation Grandmaster Yagi Ikugoro Hisayoshi, a retired Samurai from Akoh Castle (Hyogo Prefecture), opened a Dojo of Takagi Yoshin Ryu in Akashi of Hyogo.
In June of 1952, Sato Kinbei Kiyoaki was taught by Takamatsu as the 17th generation of Ishitani’s line Takagi Yoshin Ryu and Kukishin Ryu too.

The Dai Nihon Bugei Ryu Ha says that a series of techniques, which were in future years to become known as the Takagi Ryu, were put together by a wandering Taoist monk called Sounryu in 1569.
Takagi arranged several matches with them and being successful, put the Takagi Ryu on the Japanese martial arts school map in the 1600s.
Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu takes its techniques further than Judo or Aikido, who allow their opponents to breakfall or roll out of the techniques.

Takagi who was born in 1625 and died in 1711.
As a result of this match, a friendship developed between these two Ryu and when Gennoshin died, the Ryu was handed over to Okuni which led to the Takagi Yoshin Ryu and the Kukishin-den Ryu being handed down together to subsequent generations.
Hatsumi Sensei is currently the 17th Soke of the Takagi Yoshin Ryu.

Takagi Gennoshin Higeshige was the son of Umannosuke.
The taijutsu of the Takagi Yoshin Ryu was superior to the Kukishinden Ryu Taijutsu, but the Kukishinden Ryu Bojutsu was superior to that of Takagi Yoshin Ryu.
Even though Gyokko ryu can not claim to be a ninjutsu school, due to the lack of philosophy among other things, there is one saying that has followed the school: "Bushigokoro wo motte totoshi no nasu", which means "The heart of a warrior is precious and essential".

Takagi Oriemon followed his father's teaching that "a willow tree is flexible, but a tall tree will break," and founded his own school of bujutsu, calling it Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu.
Oriemon's successor was Takagi Umanosuke Shigesada, a prodigious youth who grasped the secret principles of Hontai Yoshin Ryu at the tender age of 16.
I have read that the current soke of Hontai Yoshin ryu (which I believe is from the Minaki line) has stated that it is uncertain whether or not Soke Hatsumi is practicing authentic Hontai Takagi Yoshin ryu.

Kukishinden ryu hanbojutso is the main weapon taught to students of ninjutsu in the world today and is the third school in Bujinkan.
Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu is a distant branch of the Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu.

According to traditional lore of the Hontai Yoshin Ryu, the bojutsu style it incorporates was originally characteristic of the Kukishin ryu bojutsu.

Takagi Yoshin Ryu is officially called Hontai Takagi Yoshin Ryu or Hontai Yoshin Takagi Ryu or simply Takagi Ryu; the name differs among different teachers.

During this period, ancestral fears became contempt and the stereotypical image ("clans of assassins and mercenaries who used stealth, assassination, disguises, and other tricks to do their work") was formed which, to this day, is still very much the majority opinion.
Most were developed around a series of specific skills and techniques and when the skills of a particluar ryu were no longer in demand, the ryu would (usually) fade from existence.

He inherited Sokeship to *Takagi* Yoshin ryu from Takamatsu sensei, which is a branch of the original Yoshin ryu.
The Yoshin ryu is about four-hundred years hold and fairly widespread, it should not come as a suprise that this is the case here.
A web page for the Kuki family, which has been closely related to the Takagi Oriemon tradition for many generations, provides a table of soke to the various lineages in the Yoshin ryu school, including both the Takamatsu line and the previous soke of the Hontai Yoshin ryu.

We are under the impression that Nakayama Hakudo Sensei was one of the founders of Toyama ryu iai.
In Sekiguchi ryu, among others, there is nowadays more kenjutsu even though the jujutsu in that school used to be first-rate.
Kukishin ryu bojutsu was much influenced by the Tendo ryu naginatajutsu and gave later birth to Hontai Yoshin ryu bojutsu.

How the teachings of Gyokko Ryu were passed from him to Tozawa are unknown, as written records from this era are not available.
Gyokko Ryu was incorporated into the collective known as Iga Ryu Ninpo, when it was passed into the Momochi family (circa 16th century) and has been incorrectly referred to as a "ninjutsu" school because of this.
Gyokko Ryu was established by Sasaki Goemon Teruyori, an ancestor of Sasaki Gendayu Sadayasu who was a student of Sogyokko.

 Bujinkan Dojo Nordsjælland
The 32nd Soke of Togakure Ryu, Shinryuken Masamitsu Toda, was the sword instructor for the Tokugawa Shogunate in the mid 19th century.
Ishitani Matsutaro, already the Soke of Takagi Yoshin Ryu and Kukishin Ryu, was later repaid for his kindness by being taught the Gikan Ryu, becoming the 11th generation Soke.
He learnt Gikan Ryu from Ishitani as well as Kukishinden-ryu and Hontai Takagi Yoshin-ryu) (not to be confused with Takagi Yoshin Ryu, which he learnt from Mizuta Tadefuza), for approximately two years between 1903-1905 until the death of Ishitani.
